A number of players in the Narberth team were looking forward to facing their friends from Preseli School when they travelled to Crymych on Sunday. It was the Crymych boys, though, who edged it in an exciting encounter.
Playing in heavy rain and on a muddy pitch, the visitors kicked off and gained a firm foothold in the Crymych half. The Narberth pack were getting the better of their opposite numbers at this stage and, following a series of scrums and linesout, the ball was moved wide for the full back to score in the corner.
Despite the difficult conditions, the Narberth youngsters displayed good handling skills as they passed the ball at every opportunity in an attempt to play 15-man rugby.
The home pack, however, was gaining in strength as the game progressed and carried the game into their opponents' half of the field. Shortly before the break, one of their forwards broke from a maul on the touchline to cross for a try.
The high quality rugby continued in the second half from two teams that each had four players selected recently for the Pembrokeshire and District squad.
It was the more powerful Crymych pack, though, that ensured a narrow victory in the heavy playing conditions as it secured the better of the possession. From a tapped penalty five metres out, a Crymych forward crashed over for a try and, although, Narberth's fullback almost snatched a draw at the end with a strong run for the line, the home side emerged as victors.
AMMANFORD U10s 20 pts NARBERTH U10s 5
Sunday saw Narberth travel to Ammanford for a match which was played in atrocious conditions. To add to their difficulties, Narberth lacked numbers and experience, particularly in the forwards. An injury to one of their props imediately from the kick-off created even more problems.
Ammanford were quick to capitalise on Narberth's need to reshuffle their squad and ran in three early tries. Full credit must be given to Narberth for the way in which they stuck to their task. Grim determination saw them come close to scoring on several occasions.
The second half saw Narberth claw their way back into the game. They began to recycle the ball and driving forward they seemed certain to score. Ammanford with their heavier pack and greater numbers absorbed the pressure and from a turnover they were able to score their fourth try.
Not to be outdone, Narberth upped their work rate yet again and with what proved to be the last move of the game were rewarded with a well-worked try scored by their prop forward.
AMMANFORD U11s 17 pts NARBERTH U11s 17
In a match played in driving rain, running rugby was almost impossible. The first half saw Narberth playing into the elements and despite some heroic and last ditch tackling by their backs and forwards they were unable to prevent Ammanford scoring two early tries.
Narberth, in the second half with the wind behind them, soon had Ammanford under pressure. Michael Jones broke free from a ruck almost on half-way and, driving forward, went over for a try in the far corner.
Ammanford replied almost immediately, scoring their third try.
With the score at 17-7 and time running out, Narberth needed to score twice. Taking a well-timed pass from Ieuan Davies, Rhydian Bell outpaced his opposite number and went over for an excellent try.
The score was now 17-12 and with only seconds left Michael Jones burst through the Ammanford defence to score his second and Narberth's all-important equalising try.
