Narberth 30 pts. Waunarlwydd 13
Narberth's threequarters came out of hibernation to produce some dazzling rugby at times and get the upper hand over the visitors from Waunarlwydd. The Otters opened the scoring when winger Wes Pooley caught the ball from the kick-off. Cutting back inside, Pooley kicked an up and under and then followed up to retrieve his own kick. Pooley dashed down the right touchline and then released winger Mike Georgiou, who raced away from the halfway line to touch down for an unconverted try in the right corner. The conversion attempt from Tom Lewis was on target, but dropped just short of the posts. Waunarlwydd fullback Alun Richards missed out on the chance to kick a penalty from close range after 10 minutes, but seven minutes later Richards was on target with a straightforward penalty from the 22. The dry conditions clearly suited the Narberth style of play and centre Steve Martin finished off a flowing movement when he crossed for a try in the left corner. Tom Lewis added the icing on the cake with his splendid touchline conversion. Steve Martin was in action again to finish off another exciting move by the Narberth backs to touch down for a try set up by Sion Brace and Mike Georgiou. Lewis was on target with his coversion kick to give the Otters a lead of 16 points at the interval. The Narberth backs lost some of their momentum in the second half following injuries to Mike Georgiou and Steve Martin. Shortly before the half-time interval, Mike Georgiou had to leave the field because of concussion and Steve Martin twisted his ankle. Their replacements, Rob Irving and Phil Thomas, did nothing wrong, but some of the sparkle disappeared. In addition, Waunarlwydd raised their game in the second half to fight back. There was little sign of the Waunarlwydd fight back at the start of the second half when Sion Brace eluded the defenders with a blind-side break from a scrum to touch down for a try under the posts. Somehow Tom Lewis managed to miss the conversion attempt. Waunarlwydd lock Gareth Gore scored a try for Waunarlwydd when the visitors counter-attacked after a tapped penalty by Narberth scrum-half Andrew Davies was brought to a halt. The Waunarlwydd pack drove forward and Gore touched down for an unconverted try. Tom Lewis made amends for his simple conversion miss with a well-taken drop goal. Although the visitors came back again with an unconverted try from winger Alan Pope, it was too late to alter the result and Tom Lewis capped a good all-round display by converting a difficult penalty kick from the left touchline with the last kick of the game. Commenting after the match, senior coach Jonathan Dodd said: "We produced our best performance of the season today. We dominated the game and never looked like losing. Everything we did in training we put into practice to control the tempo of the game. "Although we had some difficult moments in the second half, we still managed to outscore Waunarlwydd. "It was good to see players back from injury and encouraging to score some tries from deep, with our backs losing the shackles of the winter months. "The players are enthusiastic, turning up for training in droves, and the hard work that they have put in at training sessions during the international season is beginning to pay dividends with the bonus of a great team spirit developing at the same time." Continuing, he said: "It was a good all-round display with an impressive performance by the backs. Fullback Sion Brace played very well, while Neil Davies and Tom Lewis controlled the midfield. Our defence was good for most of the game, although we did take our foot off the pedal a bit in the second half at the same time as Waunarlwydd raised their game. "The conditions underfoot suited our backs, who counter-attacked well and scored some top quality tries. "Up front, Martin Bowen has played extremely well since moving up to the first team, while experienced players such as Alan Phillips and Emori Katalau hold things together. "David Ebsworth and Jamie Bohatau both had good all round displays on their return to the starting line-up, while Lewis Wood and Mathew Davies maintained their consistent form in the back row." Jamie Bohatau was nominated man of the match by the match sponsors, Welsh Hook Garage, Mark Hunter Foods, Stephen Hancock Concrete, T. D. Ladd, Eddies Angels from the Angel in Narberth, together with Michael Richards and Associates, of Narberth. The match ball sponsors were Penry Harries, of Cold Blow, together with Cynthia and Ian Evans, of Narberth. Narberth fielded: Sion Brace, Mike Georgiou (Rob Irving), Steve Martin (Phil Thomas), Neil Davies, Wes Pooley, Martin Bowen (Sayasi Navunitale), Gareth Jones (Adrian Chiffi), Alan Phillips, David Ebsworth, Emori Katalau (captain), Jamie Bohatau (Rob James), Mathew Davies and Lewis Wood.
