Narberth Athletic 25 Waunarlwydd 12

A crisp, frosty night at the Lewis Lloyd ground lent itself to a game of open rugby to which both teams aspired.

The first 10 minutes produced some fine running rugby by Narberth Athletic, culminating in a very snappily worked move by scrum-half Rhys Davies producing a try in the corner which he converted with a great kick.

The game then took on a more even period, flowing from end to end.

Waunarlwydd producing some fine moves, but the Narberth defence held firm especially with the two youngsters from the club Youth squad, guided by the experienced Sion Brace.

The club playing management and supporters were pleased to see Sion once more in action after a very long lay off through injury.

Narberth started to dominate the rucks and scrums which produced a number of penalties, one of which was converted by Rhys Davies.

In the 30th minute came one of the best moves of the evening, with a scrum some 20-metres from the try line.

The Otters pack released quick ball to scrum-half Rhys Davies who quickly passed to Sion Brace, then with the ball passing from hand to hand, the movement was finished with Sion going over in the corner.

This produced a period of Narberth dominance culminating with a snappy try from number eight Colin Davies.

Waunarlwydd immediately struck back with a try just before half-time scored by Mike Lewis.

At half-time, the score read Narberth Athletic 18 Waunarlwydd 5.

The second half produced more effective rugby from Waunarlwydd who were rewarded by a try from James Hunt, converted by John Morris.

At 18-12, the game was well-placed for a visitors recovery.

However, the Athletic dug deep and dogged it out, producing a push over try in the 65th minute by prop Tom Slater which was converted by Rhys Davies.

Team manager John Hodgeon afterwards commented that it had been quite a good game to watch and it was good to see four of the youth boys, especially John Edwards, whose work rate was good and effective.

Daniel Hiscocks tasted Athletic rugby for the first time and clearly enjoyed the experience.

Finally, welcome back to Arwyn Williams, a flying wing of the Youth of a few years back, and a welcome return to Sion Brace now recovered from his knee injury.
