Autumn is always a notable time for Narberth and District Probus Club and this year was no exception. Beginning with the September Ladies Lunch when over 70 guests sat down to a delicious lunch in Nantyffin's Blue Room. The club has been most fortunate in its choice of venue, happily ensconced at Nantyffin under its proprietors for over 28 years, the indomitable founders, Henry and Muriel Thomas, and since the Millennium, Emrys and Anne Murrow, who building upon the former's firm foundations have made Nantyffin host to commercial and educational groups, conferences, seminars and exhibitions from all parts of the principality.
On October 30, the 28th AGM was held, again in Nantyffin's Blue Room, with retiring president, Evan Davies, in the chair.
Rising to make his farewell comments, Evan emphasised his gratitude to the committee for their stalwart support during his year of office and particularly to John Mathias his very able secretary. He said that he had learned a great deal in his year of office and enjoyed the experience.
In his report, the secretary, John Mathias, said that on looking back over the year he had noticed the great importance of the membership, the wide variety of characters with their individual contributions creating a rich tapestry which led to a most enjoyable atmosphere and bonhomie.
During the year, three members had sadly passed away and four new members had gladly joined the ranks; Henry Thomas had celebrated his 90th birthday and now the club could boast two nonagenarians.
Excellent speakers gave most interesting talks on a wide range of topics, including the French Invasion of Pembroke, the Laws of Hywel Dda, the Work of Ty Hafen and a Life in Choral Music, to name but a few.
In July, the members enjoyed a tour of Newton House at Dynefor, after a welcome lunch at the Plough, Rhosmaen, and in the spring, Narberth Probus were hosts to Ludlow Probus, while Col. Richard Gilbertson entertained Ludlow members at the Ladies Lunch, as guest speaker.
Speaking at his investiture, Len Jones, the new president, said that he looked forward to serving the members during his term of office and asked the members to accept the committee's recommendations that John Mathias serve next year in the capacity of vice-president and secretary, that John Wretham, Derrick Charles and Kenneth Kendall retain their status as assistant secretary, treasurer and almoner/press secretary.
On bringing the meeting to its close, Len Jones reminded members that the next meeting on November 27 would host Bill Ratcliffe, of the Royal Agricultural Society, as guest speaker.
Any retired professional/businessman wishing to join should ring the club secretary on 01834 861315.
