A team from Prendergast has won a county-wide primary schools hockey competition.

The young team from Haverfordwest beat St. Oswalds in a nail-biting final to the Pembrokeshire Activate competition last week.

They will now play in the national Activate final in Newtown on July 1.

Organised by Sport Pembrokeshire - the sports development arm of Pembrokeshire County Council - and the Welsh Hockey Union, the county competition saw 170 youngsters and 17 teams take to the field for the initial rounds earlier this month.

Four teams qualified for the final which was held at Fishguard Leisure Centre last Friday, June 10.

Teams from Prendergast, Llanychllwydog, St. Teilo's and St. Oswalds played each other, with Prendergast winning the final 1-0.

Sport Pembrokeshire hockey development officer, Angela Miles, said she was impressed by the standard of hockey played by all four teams.

"Some of the young players have really got into the game and are now attending hockey fun centres across the county," she said.

"I hope that many of them will now go on to join their local hockey clubs."

Umpire Julie Campbell presented Prendegast with their winning medal, which was sponsored by Chevron.
