Tenby Youth travelled to Haverfordwest on Saturday for a non-league game. Haverfordwest are in the higher league and it was an opportunity for the team to play a stronger side and try out some players in new positions.
The main pitch was unplayable due to the rain the previous night and the match was played on the waterlogged reserve pitch.
With their regular scrum-half out due to injury, it was a big test for young Daniel Young who had an outstanding game, feeding his backs at every opportunity in dreadful conditions. Aled tried to put the ball down field, but with the slippery ball, it was not easy.
Alex Watt and Jason Keights took on the Haverfordwest centres who had to make some crunching tackles. But it was the forward strength once again that allowed Tenby to keep up the pressure and strong John Sheasby crashed through for a try 30 minutes into the game.
Tenby kept up the pressure with forward rushes and the backs smothering any attacks from the opposition very effectively. The wet sponge was in almost continuous use clearing eyes and mouths of the heavy mud.
It was left to Sheasby to increase the score just before half-time with his second try.
At half-time, some controversial changes were made. Haverfordwest, with the slope and some determined running, threatened the line on a number of occasions, but the defence held fast.
Further changes were made, with Jason Keights being tried out at scrum-half. It was Jason who scored next with some fine running from the backs to put Tenby 15 points up.
Just before the final whistle, Tenby were caught napping and Haverfordwest ran in for a try under the posts which was converted, making the final score Tenby 15 Haverfordwest 7.
