February 14 saw the ladies from Tenby Golf Club celebrate St. Valentine's Day with a team stableford competition. Ladies' captain Nesta Hart presented red roses to the two winning teams. What she didn't expect was to be in the winning team herself! Along with Anne Wilks and Toni Lucas, they beat the next team of Gillian Roberts, Mel Smith and Ros Williams, on the back nine with 61 points. It was agreed that it added a lovely finish to a bitterly cold day of golf.
Chicken Steve steals the show
Steve Cole certainly had plenty to chirp about last weekend after enjoying a busy and successful few days of golf. On Saturday, he and his wife Pam celebrated victory in the the club's Valentine's mixed foursomes competition. But that was hardly surprising, as Steve was in good form after warming up for the event with another victory the previous day in the weekly outing of the Chicken Trotters. Enjoying the bright, if chilly, conditions on Friday morning, he led the brood home with a tidy 15- hole round of 25 points - the lessons with the pro must be working, eh Steve? And that was one better than his nearest rival Pat Rees, who had to settle for second place. Only one birdie two was bagged on the day and that was by David Henry on the sixth. Two players, meanwhile, were vying for the booby as they returned to the hutch with 17 points apiece, but because of the tie, there was no payout. Only 12 chicks ventured out on the day - apparently some had flown south in search of warmer climes - and with the end of the season rapidly approaching, the appeal again goes out for 'more please'. Morran, Mickey and the rest of the crew look forward to welcoming you to the coop. Results: 1. Steve Cole 25 pts (£2); 2. Pat Rees 24 (£1). Booby: tied (no payout). FOOTNOTE: Alas, Steve Cole failed to make it three wins in a row. Subbing in the Rabbits Winter League on Sunday morning, he couldn't help his partner Bill Beynon off the bottom of the table as they slipped to a narrow defeat. Still, two out of three ain't bad!
Impressive scoring in Valentine's event
Saturday, February 16, saw the first event in the diary for the Mixed Foursomes at Tenby Golf Club, with the St Valentine's competition, with a dinner dance to follow. With 20 pairs entered, and played in good, dry conditions, it was a fine start for the year. With the course in such good condition, with the greens firm and fast, together with neat tight fairways, all prepared by our expert head greenkeeper Chris Jenkins and his staff, we expected and got some excellent scores. Eventual winners were Pam Cole and Steve Cole with an impressive 43 points. Following in the runners-up position were Tenby Ladies captain, Nesta Hart and Peter Hart, with an excellent 37 points, while in third place with a very creditable score of 36 points were Laura McQueen and Jim Moffat. With only one two being recorded, which was at the sixth hole, Mary Lewis and Hywel Probert took the pot. Not to be forgotten, the bag draw was shared by Liz Storey and Allan Spriggs, with Fern Fraser and John Ball. All winnings are recorded in the professional's shop. The golf competition was followed in the evening by a sumptuous meal prepared by Lynne Jenkins and her team; followed by, slow, and fast dancing to Billy Cole and group. The next event for the mixed is the Brooks Cup on March 22 - the sheet is up ready for names.

Rabbits go all the way
Not much to say this week; everyone must be getting serious and focusing on those final silverware places. With every game going over the line last weekend, it makes the final league games this Sunday even more interesting. Indeed, no less than five teams are battling it out for the second and third spots, while it is between three pairs for the wooden spoon, with Bill Beynon and George Pegg currently occupying bottom spot. As you probably know, the top spot in the league is already done and dusted, with Mark Edwards and Terry Davies sewing it up last week. Shame on them then for losing their unbeaten record on Sunday to the experience of big Dave Morgan and super sub Roy Morgan. Your reporter knows what both of these can play like, having played with Roy a few times when winning the league and then dragging Dave down to his level a year later and coming bottom! Sunday's results: Mick Gillet and Jerry Whitehouse beat Anthony Allan and Dave Moran 2 and 1; Chris Smith and Phil Carpenter (sub for Mike Hale) beat Daffyd Evans and Steve Maytum 1 up; Dave Morgan and Roy Morgan (sub for John Murphy) showed Mark Edwards and Terry Davies how it's done, 2 and 1; Macky Harts and John Hunt halved with Mike Munro and Chris Davies; Ron Murphy and Fred Adlam beat Paul James and Neil Dickinson (sub for Tony Andrews) 1 up; and Dorian Thomas and Simon Evans beat the spooners Bill Beynon and Steve Cole (sub for George Pegg) 3 and 2.
Wanted: A shotgun for Macky (Elma Fudd) Harts and some porridge for Bill Beynon and George Pegg! Coming up: March 9 - the Duffy Cup and Joe S. Williams Shield, which is open to all paid-up Rabbits.
