Sir,
While on holiday in Saundersfoot, I read the story in your paper, regarding Sgt. Ernest George Lewis, who lost his life in 1944 while on operations with RAF Bomber Command, and I thought you may like to know a little more about the operation that cost him his life.
Sgt. Lewis was a crew member of Lancaster LM 102 UM-Z2 of 626 Squadron RAF, stationed at Wickenby. It took off at 22.22 on the night of June 22, 1944, accompanied by aircraft from several other squadrons, to take part in an operation to bomb rail facilities at Reims, roughly 150 Km WNW of Paris.
It was shot down, crashing at Belloy (Oise), killing the crew, who were laid to rest in the local churchyard on June 24, 1944. They were: Pilot -Sgt. R. A. Woolley; Navigator - Sgt. F. Goddard; Flt. Engineer - Sgt. A. D. Hawkins; Bomb Aimer - Sgt. E. G. Lewis; Wireless Operator -Sgt. H. G. Browne; Air Gunner - Sgt. P. A. D. Lawrence; Air Gunner - Sgt. E. R. S. Kirby. All laid to rest in Belloy Churchyard.
