Sir,

I would like to correct an article, which appeared in the Tenby Observer recently with regards to Broadband availability in Tenby. This article was misleading.

Before BT will consider putting in place the equipment needed for Broadband into our exchange a trigger level of applicants for the service has to be met. Currently for most of the UK this level is between 300-400 applicants. As of February 26, only 85 people had registered.

Many businesses will suffer over the coming one-two years without Broadband connectivity. Currently businesses are having to use unreliable dial-up connection, ISDN and fixed lease lines to get the most simple of Internet services. As the reliance on information exchange across the Internet increases the need for low cost, high speed, reliable connection become paramount.

This does not only effect business users, home users are being registered to low speeds and unreliable connections. As we have all seen from the adverts, the one great benefit for home users is that with Broadband you can surf and 'phone simultaneously. No more dial-up cost and always online.

Currently 68 per cent of home users and 72 per cent of business users have access to Broadband through the UK.

What is Broadband?

Broadband is a term that describes the high-speed delivery of digital content. Although the actual speed at which access is deemed 'broadband' differs, the overall consensus is that true broadband implies the ability to transmit seamless voice, data and video content.

In the Internet age, high speed access has been somewhat of an empty promise, but there are several forces at work today that suggest ubiquitous broadband access may not be too far down the road for Tenby, and could be months rather than years away.

But unless the businesses and residents of Tenby register for the service and push the level of applicants above the trigger level (300-400 people) we will not be considered by BT for Broadband.

How to register: Register on-line http://ww.bt.com/broadband">http://ww.bt.com/broadband or 'phone BT on their customer service number printed on your bill.
