A morale-boosting win for the Otters brought the curtain down on the final league game of the season at the Lewis Lloyd ground. There was nothing to play for as both teams had been ruled out of the promotion race and any anxiety about relegation had been erased. Consequently, both teams were able to display their prowess at 15-man running rugby, with varying degrees of success, as both teams made a number of unforced errors in a game, which was nevertheless very entertaining. Winger Willie Davies opened the scoring for the visitors, with a try in the left corner after seven minutes, following a break by centre Gwyn Rowlands. The try was not converted and two minutes later, the Otters went in front when centre Steve Davies cut through the defence, to set up a try for scrum-half Adrian Killa under the posts which was converted by outside-half Gareth James. Llan bounced back with a penalty from centre Ian Merks, who added another for good measure after 30 minutes. Play moved quickly from one end of the field to the other and Narberth centre Steve Davies came close to scoring shortly before the interval. Immediately upon the start of the second half, fullback Sion Brace came into the line and finished off a good handling movement with an unconverted try in the right corner to edge the Narberth team in front. Ten minutes later, the lead was extended with a short distance penalty by Gareth James. Much to the delight of the crowd, lock Emori Katalau crossed for a try under the posts converted by Gareth James and with a lead of 11 points, possibly the Otters relaxed a little. Replacement winger Mark Bowen reduced the deficit with a try converted by Ian Merks to set up an exciting finish. Tension mounted, especially when outside- half Gareth James hit the left upright with a straight penalty attempt from the 22, but the Otters managed to cling on to the lead to end a lean period where league points have been difficult to obtain. Speaking after the match, Narberth's director of rugby, Rob Phillips, said: "It was nice to get three points again after quite a barren spell. It was a typical end of season performance between two sides with nothing to play for. "Nevertheless Llangennech battled hard and every time we got in front we seemed to relax and let them back in again. Perhaps if circumstances had been different, the level of performance might have been different, but it was a close call at the end. "With 20 minutes to go we should have closed the game off and we need to take that lesson on board for the future. "However, the game gave us an opportunity to have a look at a couple of players. Anthony Griffiths had a good return to the club at number eight and flanker Colin Davies made a big impact when he came on during the second half. Consequently, we took a couple of bonuses out of the game as well as the three points". "Scrum -half Adrin Killa and lock Emori Katalau were nominated as the men-of-the- match, by the match sponsors, Dawnus Construction Ltd., of Swansea, and Jeff Jenkins and friends, of Narberth. The match ball sponsors were Wyn Phillips, of Narberth, W. J. Kenneth Davies and Sons, of Clynderwen, Narberth RFC Junior Section, the Narberth Former Players Association and Joanne's Allsorts.
