Pembroke and District Male Voice Choir were joined by Pennar Junior School for their annual carol concert at Monkton Priory Church, Pembroke, on December 14, when to a capacity audience in the atmospheric setting they provided a programme of Christmas music of variety and quality. Welcomed to the church by the rector, the Rev. Martin Cox, the Male Voice Choir was conducted by David Gwynn and accompanied by Chris Lloyd, assisted by Alyson Griffiths, while Pennar School, who appeared because they were this year's winners in the Schools Choir competition run by the Male Voice, were led by Claire Thomas and accompanied by Debbie Kaijaks. The concert, compered by Phil Lloyd, also featured a solo by Joan Lewis, soprano, while Alyson Griffiths, flute, added accompaniment to a number of choir items. The Male Voice president, Phil Thompson, presented a cheque for £400 to a young local boy, Harry Bonning, to go towards providing him with a new wheelchair, and commented on the standard of the singing that evening and said it was especially pleasing to hear the Pennar School give such enthusiasm and expertise to their pieces. The evening opened with the carol 'Hark the Herald Angel Sing' sung by both choirs and audience, followed by three items from the Male Voice Choir who during the evening sang 'Oh Holy Night', 'Deck the Halls', 'Good Christian Men', 'It came upon a Midnight Clear', 'Infant Holy' and 'We Three Kings of Orient Are' in which solo pieces were sung by Eric Rawles, Sam Thomas and Frank Harries. The school choir sang in two spots, rendering amongst their pieces 'Silent Night', 'In the Bleak Midwinter' and a rousing 'I Wish it Could be Christmas Every Day', this last item gaining a standing ovation and an encore, a rewarding conclusion to the children's efforts and those of their teachers.
