National League division two strugglers Oakdale ended all remaining hopes Narberth had of grabbing one of the two promotion places in the division with their emphatic 46-21 victory over the Otters at The Square on Saturday.

Unable to raise their game following their defeat at the hands of promotion rivals Whitland the previous week, Narberth never really got out of the blocks in the first half, with 'Dale building up a commanding 22-nil interval lead.

Star of the show for 'Dale in the opening 40 minutes was fly-half Jonathan Williams who slotted over five penalties and also added the extras after wing Gareth Lane skirted the Otters' defence to bag a try.

Williams further extended the homesters' lead in the opening minutes after the turn around, before Narberth gained a foothold with two tries by John Whitticombe and another touchdown by centre Rouan Nel.

Outside-half Julian Howells converted Whitticombe's first, while replacement stand-off Aled Davies, making his first team debut, was successful in adding the extras to Narberth's other two touchdowns.

However, Williams again shone for 'Dale, grabbing two opportunist tries from interceptions which he converted, before making matters safe by goaling another two-pointer after fullback Paul Thatcher zipped over for the homesters.

The Otters bounced back on Monday, however, treating their stalwart fans to a sunshine display of running rugby to trounce Tredegar by 61 points to 27 at the Lewis Lloyd ground.

The last home game of the season, the Otters opened up a commanding lead, with tries coming from wings Whitticombe and Steve Hartland, fullback Ifan Jones and prop Alan Phillips, three of which were converted by Howells.

Tredegar fullback Gerwyn Pearson landed a penalty for the visitors to make it 26-3 at the break.

The Otters upped the tempo after the change around with five further tries from expansive play.

Hartland and Whitticombe each grabbed their second, while number eight Gareth Bennett also picked up a brace. Making his home debut in the league, Aled Davies also picked up a try, with Howells converting all five.

Narberth's free-running style always runs the risk of exposing them to counter-thrusts and the visitors can console themselves with four well-taken second half tries - two from wing Daniel Morris and one apiece from flanker Mark Gregory and replacement scrum-half Gary Pearson. Gerwyn Pearson converted two.

Narberth round off their season tomorrow (Saturday) when they travel up the line to take on Rhymney.
