Community sports champion Matthew ‘Minty’ Lamb is about to embark on gruelling midnight hike for Children in Need.

A senior finance officer with Pembrokeshire County Council, Matthew is finalising his preparations for the 48.5 miles triangular hike between County Hall in Haverfordwest, St. Davids and Fishguard before finishing the trek back at County Hall.

It’s estimated the walk, which begins at midnight on Thursday, November 17, will take approximately 16 hours.

Matthew is no stranger to fundraising after having his legs waxed for the charity in 2014 before walking from his home town of Fishguard to work last year.

He hopes to collect around £1,000 for the charity which will be an increase on the £800 he raised in 2015.

He’ll be joined at various stretches of the walk by colleagues Alistair Birch and Huw Jones.

“When I had my legs waxed a few of my colleagues were disappointed I didn’t scream in pain,” said Mathew. “Yet somehow I think I will be during this trek.

“There will be some challenges along the way, not least the fact I’ll be walking in the dark for the vast majority of it, but the terrain will be difficult too and no matter how fit you feel you are, some of the hills on the route will take it out of you.

“It’s all for a good cause however.”

Seasoned fundraiser Matthew is also an award winning football coach having been crowned club organiser of the year at the 2015 Pembrokeshire Sports Awards and more recently he was honoured at the FAW Community Awards in Cardiff City Stadium.

He coaches Fishguard girls’ teams and set-up a disability team which trains weekly and competes at various tournaments throughout South Wales.

His dedication to grassroots sport and seen him shortlisted for the BBC Cymru Wales Sports Awards to be held on Monday, December 5, in Cardiff.
