The Mermaid on The Strand Restaurant in Saundersfoot was filled to capacity on the evening of Friday, January 25, when the Saundersfoot, Tenby and District committee of Macmillan Cancer Support held a fish and chip supper there. The charity's supporters enjoyed a delicious meal and the event raised a splendid £915. This will be used to improve cancer services in South West Wales. The supper is a popular annual event. The Mermaid's young staff were friendly and efficient as they served the full house. Retiring chairman Penelope Meyrick thanked everyone for supporting her during her two years in office. She then introduced her successor, Pauline Davies, of Amroth. Pauline thanked everyone who attended the supper. She also thanked Lindsey and Andrew Evans, owners of The Mermaid, whose invitation to hold the event, and generosity and hard work, made the occasion not only possible, but a resounding success; honorary treasurer, Nesta Williams, who had successfully juggled the challenging seating plan; and Anne Einon, who had co-ordinated the event. Some committee members had taken part in the Saundersfoot New Year's Day Swim and this, combined with the success of the Mermaid supper, ensured that the committee's fund-raising for 2008 got off to a fine start.
