Sixteen teams from the Kilgetty area enjoyed a festival of six-a-side football on Whit Sunday, bathed in the warm sunshine of the Bank Holiday weekend. They were all at Kingsmoor Sports Ground to compete for the Huw Lewis Memorial Shield, but more importantly were there to honour and remember Huw, who tragically died suddenly in the autumn last year whilst himself playing in a football tournament in Saudi Arabia.

This was an occasion Huw would have enjoyed and been enthusiastic about. A keen sportsman and effusive personality in the Kilgetty club, he would have revelled in the companionship and spirit of the occasion as well as demonstrating his prowess on the pitch.

It was such a spirit that pervaded the club on this occasion as all teams competed in a well organised event and enjoyed each other's company in the club. Many of his fellow sportsmen were there from Narberth, Carew, Lawrenny, Manorbier, Templeton, Tenby and Saundersfoot, joining a number of teams from the club itself as well as a guest team from Cambridge, brought along by his brother Johnny.

The 16 teams were divided into four groups, with each group allocated a pitch and two referees, who were instrumental in ensuring that fair play was maintained. All of the men in black - Colin Williams, Colin Newbury, Iwan Davies, Alan Ormond, Dai Phillips, Shinner Cook, Richard Stephens and Paul Smith - remarked how much easier it was to keep up with play on the miniature pitches!

Following the league stage, all teams competed in the knockout games in the main competition and a plate competition.

In the shield competition, Rusty beat Narberth by four goals to three, while Tenby beat Barbies by a single goal.

In the plate competition, Real Templeton beat Saundersfoot 2-0 and Lawrenny beat Pembs. All Stars 4-3.

This set up the two finals which were played in front of the clubhouse to a large gathering who were enjoying the warm evening sun and the aroma of cooked pork from the pig roast provide by Andrew Rees, of Narberth.

Both finals were keenly contested in their final 26 minutes of play, with Templeton running out plate winners over Lawrenny, scoring the only two goals.

The winners of the shield final were Tenby who showed greater commitment and organisation than their opposition, Rusty, and scored the only goal of the game.

The presentation of the shield and trophies was made by Huw's brother and sister, Rebecca and Johnny.

The organisers of the event, Dean Rossiter, Barry Lewis, Neil Proctor, Paul Mansbridge and Kelly Rossiter, all contemporaries of Huw, were congratulated on their commitment and effort as well as the success of the occasion, which is to become an annual event.

A good evening was enjoyed by all who stayed, finishing off the pig roast and dancing to the music provided by Alan Ormond and friends.
