Sir,

It was with great pleasure that I read (Observer, December 20) that the Roll of Honour in St. Mary's Church was to be renovated. The current typewritten version with handwritten amendments does not reflect the dignity of the document.

At the conclusion of each world war, the borough clerk collated the details of those who had Fallen, but relied upon relatives/friends of the Fallen to provide him with the details.

Unfortunately, for various reasons - each thinking someone else was going to do it, failure to give the details before the closing date or in the case of two sisters failing to provide details as they felt it was accepting charity - there are a number of anomalies.

For instance, there are three names on the List of Absentee Voters for 1917 which are listed as 'Killed in Action', but they do not appear on any memorial.

It is probably too late now to do anything about WWI, but it occurs to me that the renovation of the Roll of Honour is an appropriate time and probably the last chance while there is still some tribal memory existant in the town to try and resolve some of the anomalies for WWII.

The former Council/County Primary School WWII Memorial, which is now in the Junior School, records the names and photographs of 29 former pupils who fell in WWII.

However, I cannot find five of those names - Ellis Skyrme, Geoffrey Bowen, Peter Emerton, Jack Johns and Harold Brummel - on either the War Memorial or the Roll of Honour.

Ellis Skyrme is one of six names on the Penally War Memorial and there is a Jack Jones on the Tenby Roll of Honour, but not on the War Memorial.

The Greenhill Grammar School WWII Memorial has 16 names listed, but four of those names - Geoffrey Bowen, Harold Brummel, Dewi Davies and Richard James - do not appear on the War Memorial, though Richard James is on the Roll of Honour.

The War Memorial in Trafalgar Gardens has the names of 50 military Fallen and five civilian casualties in WWII, whereas the Roll of Honour in St. Mary's Church has 55 military Fallen and seven civilian casualties in WWII.

In addition, there are a few names on the War Memorial that are not on the Roll of Honour and vice versa.

It may well be that some of the apparent anomalies are merely spelling errors as in the instance of 'Geoffrey Badham' and 'Jeffrey Badham'.

However, if there are any readers who have first-hand knowledge or documentary evidence of any omissions/errors it would be appreciated if they would contact the town clerk, Mr. Andrew Davies, at the Council Offices or myself.
