A planned meeting to address concerns for business owners and residents in Saundersfoot, over the Ironman Wales date, has been cancelled due to the village’s venue being out of action.

Saundersfoot’s Regency Hall has been forced to close for a week due to a severe leak at the building on Saturday (February 4), meaning the meeting scheduled for Tuesday evening (February 7) has been ditched.

It has been announced that Ironman Wales will officially go ahead in early September this year, despite concerns raised by local councillors and businesses.

Soon after last year’s event, the organisers of the triathlon which takes place in and around Tenby and Saundersfoot, announced that 2023’s event would take place earlier on September 3, but questions were asked by businesses and councillors, as to whether this would bring as much benefit to the local economy, by not holding the event beyond the summer holidays, effectively extending the season in the area.

“As you're all aware I have called a public meeting for this coming Tuesday, February 7 to listen to your views regarding the Ironman Wales event due to be held on September 3 - it is with deep regret that due to a major water leak and subsequent damage over the weekend at the Regency Hall, that I am having to cancel the meeting as the hall is now unavailable as urgent and extensive repairs are underway,” said county councillor for Saundersfoot’s south ward Cllr Chris Williams.

“I’m extremely disappointed that we can’t meet up in person, but rather than lose out on gathering any views and comments you may have I would ask that you email me in order that I (and PCC) can better understand the local impact that this event has.

“I would also ask that you include any suggestions and/or improvements you may have for future Ironman events,” he added.
