A Llanboidy councillor of 48 years has been recognised in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.

Seventy-seven-year-old Clr. John Gibbin, has been awarded an MBE for services to the community in West Wales.

Between 1973 and 1996, Clr. Gibbin was a member of Carmarthenshire District Council and served on Carmarthenshire County Council as member for Llanboidy until he retired in 2004.

Married to Lorraine and a retired farmer, Clr. Gibbin is also a former chairman of the Narberth Crematorium Committee and the Whitland Mart Committee, as well as being a member of the Carmarthen Dinefwr Community Health Council.

He is currently deacon at Cefnypant Congregational Chapel and still sits on Llanboidy Community Council and the Village Hall Committee.

Clr. Gibbin has been an active fundraiser for many years, helping raise money for local charities, including the former Coomb Cheshire Home at Llanybri.

Carmarthenshire County Council leader Clr. Kevin Madge said: "I would like to congratulate John Gibbin on his MBE. It is well deserved."

Executive board member for regeneration and leisure Clr. Meryl Gravell added: "I'm absolutely delighted and remember John very well from when he was with us. He was a very good local member."
