Mayor of Tenby, Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown, popped into the Cancer Research Campaign Cymru/Wales shop in Tudor Square on Tuesday to thank the loyal volunteers who help run the shop for all their work.
The visit was arranged as part of National Volunteers Week, which is particularly high profile this year as 2001 has been named as the International Year of Volunteering.
All the shops in the Cancer Research Campaign's 272-strong chain have teams of volunteers helping to run them and, during her visit, Clr. Mrs. Brown was given an insight into their work, steaming, sizing and pricing donated clothes and other goods for display and manning the till.
She thanked the volunteers for all their efforts, commenting that they were much appreciated by the town, with the shop providing a valuable service.
During the Mayor's visit, shop manager Jean Wilkinson also thanked the volunteers, not only on her own behalf, but on behalf of the campaign's director general, Professor Gordon McVie.
In his statement to volunteers, Prof. McVie said: "This year the Cancer Research Campaign will spend £67 million on research projects all over the UK - that's five million more than last year and 11 million more than the year before that.
"This extra money is crucial to enable our doctors and scientists to produce work of the very highest standards.
"But it has to come from somewhere, someone has to raise it for them - and that's where volunteers are so crucial.
"Volunteers are the very essence of our organisation and I am humbled by your dedication," Prof. McVie concluded.
Anyone who would like to join the team of volunteers in the Tenby shop can contact manager Jean Wilkinson on (01834) 845451.
