Mayor of Tenby, Clr. Mrs. Maureen Ward has fired a broadside this week over lack of public support for events staged at the town's De Valence Pavilion.

Clr. Mrs. Ward contacted the Observer this week to express her "extreme disappointment" over the fact that two major events at the town council run Pavilion had attracted less that 120 people between them.

"I just don't know what people want," she said.

"Last year the people of the town were forever complaining that there was nothing on at the De Valence during the summer.

"This year we have gone to considerable expense to provide the sort of entertainment that we think people would like and still we don't get any support."

Clr. Mrs. Ward explained that the American-style wrestling evening last Friday had attracted "around 50 people" while just 57 had turned out to see a rock and roll tribute show by Phil Hayley and his Comments on Tuesday night.

"Everyone who did come thoroughly enjoyed themselves, I just don't know what people want," she said.

"We are trying so hard to make the De Valence work yet we are just not getting the houses.

"We have been giving flyers out all round town, we've advertised in the local press, and even our Town Crier, John Thomas has been out and about trying to drum up trade so people can't complain that they don't know these things are on.

"People are always complaining about the losses the De Valence makes. We are trying to turn that around and provide entertainment for the town. It's extremely disappointing to think that people are not prepared to support events.

"Instead of continually knocking the De Valence we would appreciate some support from the people of the town, not only by coming to these events themselves but by passing on the information as to what is on to visitors."

Clr. Mrs. Ward added that she hoped that the second American wrestling evening next Friday would receive better support.

"The wrestlers were great, they really played up to the kiddies in the audience and everyone loved it. It's just a shame that so few people saw it.

"We've got such a varied programme, with plays and musical entertainment provided by the likes of Tenby Players as well the town council organised family nights and wrestling, there should be something for everyone. I hope the situation improves next week."
