Local festive baker Maureen Lower MBE, has given another New Year boost to charity, raising £900 from her Christmas cake sales.

Maureen a volunteer at the Tenby Cancer Research Shop located at Tudor Square has been making and selling real traditional Christmas cakes to aid various charities for over 30 years now.

Over the festive period, she set about once again making and selling her own traditional Christmas cakes, baking 114 in total all, with marzipan, icing and decorations.

A native of Birmingham, Maureen, who lived in Berlin for 42 years, and now resides in Kilgetty, was awarded the MBE from Her Majesty the Queen in 2003 for her volunteering work, and the German Medal of Merit.

With £830 of the funds raised going towards Cancer Research UK, £70 of the money will be donated to Tenovus Cancer Care, where Maureen is a member of the fundraising committee.

“I would like to thank everyone involved for their support, my regular customers and new ones for supporting me,” said Maureen.

“Most of the work was done by myself at home, so it took a long time.

“I had a little help from a couple of friends, so I wish to thank them very much for supporting me.

“Our late Queen knew about the Christmas cakes I made, as I have been doing them for charity since around 1989 and in Wales every year since 2016.”

Thanks go to the following for donating towards the cause and helping: Linda Williams in Amroth; Jewson in Tenby for two canvases (for the base of the cakes); Sharon and Andrew Ellis for cutting out the base rings; Dave from Kilgetty Co-op; Sian Rees from Morrisons.
