Each year, the Martletwy and District Young Farmers Show attracts some of the very best livestock entries in keen competition from across West Wales and Wednesday's event was no exception.

Relocated four miles down the road, to a site on the former Carew airfield at Sageston, this was a positive decision, taken by the committee over the winter months, after again suffering last year's unbelievably wet day on The Downs at Cresselly.

Sadly, the weather turned out to be almost exactly the same, but the ground conditions held up, there was ample hard standing for vehicle parking and, to their very great credit, livestock breeders brought their entries forward despite the easy option on such a day of staying at home.

From the horse and pony sections, the supreme judge, Mrs. Liz Thomas, selected the five-year-old Working Hunter Pony, Penstrumbly Polyanna, ridden by Isobel Meyrick as the overall winner.

Welsh Blacks from the James family, of Maenclochog, carried off the beef breeds trophy and Anthony and Hugh Davies, of Welston, did likewise with their Holstein entries in the dairy section.

More than 200 sheep were forward in various classes and it was a Charollais ewe from Arwyn and Jayne Thomas, of Whitland, that took the championship. A Texel from Jim Jones - better known as Jim TV - stood in reserve and the group prize was given to Barry and Eirlys Jones with their Hamps.

Show committee chairman Gethin Vaughan expressed the most grateful thanks of himself and his committee to everyone who had loyally supported the show in far from ideal conditions. He said he wished that everyone would come again next year when, according to the law of averages, a fine day was assured!
