Tenby Town councillors are to join with their Penally counterparts today (Friday) to discuss a proposed new footpath on the Clicketts side of the Marsh Road.

At their last meeting, Tenby councillors expressed concern that the footpath, suggested by Pembrokeshire County Council as part of the National Assembly funded Safe Routes to School scheme, was superfluous and 'an unnecessary expense'.

They pointed out that schoolchildren used the existing footpath from Tenby to Penally alongside 'Bowen's Field' and felt that a 'splitter' island to assist crossing from Kiln Park to Penally would be more beneficial.

As the county council's highways department had not been in favour of this, councillors suggested that the money be spent to provide a safe route to school elsewhere, possibly at Tenby's St. Teilo's School.

Speaking at Tuesday night's meeting of the town council, Clr. Mickey Folland revealed that he had conveyed these views to the county's highways officer.

"He has agreed to hold a second site meeting with us to discuss the pavement proposal," he explained.

"We have also agreed to invite Penally Community Council representatives, along with their county council representative, Clr. Mrs. Carol Cavill,

"Unknowingly, when we discussed this at our last meeting, we trespassed into Penally's ground," he said. "We didn't mean to and the Mayor has written to apologise.

"As a result, we feel it best for them to attend the meeting, too, to try and button everything up."

Clr. Folland revealed that the site meeting would be held today (Friday) at 2.30 pm.
