Recently Tenby Museum and Art Gallery was fortunate to receive a kind donation of the gangway ship’s crest from HMS Tenby. David Macalister, Secretary of the HMS Tenby Association, signed over the item to Mark Lewis, Curator at Tenby Museum.

HMS Tenby Association currently consists of 60 members, 5 of whom are widows, and seven of the rest now live in Canada, Peru, Australia, the USA, Spain and Malta. Each year the Association has a reunion and the ship’s crest was used at these reunions.

Three vessels have borne the name HMS Tenby in the past – a First World War trawler; a Bangor Class minesweeper, J34 and a Type 12 Whitby Class Anti-Submarine frigate, F65. F65 visited Tenby many times and was awarded the Freedom of the Borough in 1970.

Mark said: “We are extremely grateful to the HMS Tenby Association for this kind donation to the museum. It is a wonderful item of social, maritime and military history that adds to the story of this historic ship.”

The item is now on display in the museum’s maritime section.
