A member of the Pembrokeshire Harriers Running Club took home a gold medal from last Sunday's Anglesey marathon where the Welsh AAA incorporated their national marathon championships.

David Phillips became the Welsh champion when he raced across the finishing line in a winning time of four hours and 27 minutes in the 60 to 65 age group. He was presented with his medal by Colin Jackson.

"This medal will hang nicely on my dad's framed Welsh rugby jersey and cap in our bungalow in Penally," said David, who lives in the village for some of the year (where his mum Gladys and dad used to live) and in Warwickshire for the other part, where he runs an accountancy business.

"My father Dewi won his cap at Cardiff Arms Park in 1921 on the wing against France when he was playing for Mountain Ash" he added.

"My aim now is for the 400th full marathon to be in Olympic year 2012 in London and to have raised £50,000 for charities - 45 fulls to go and £15,000."
