A 30-year-old information manager is lacing up her running shoes for the world's most famous marathon. Alison Rogers (pictured) is competing in this month's London Marathon to raise money for BLISS and in particular for the Precious Star Fund set up in memory of little George Albert Jules Orry. The first baby of Emily and Pete Orry, George, who was born prematurely at 32 weeks, sadly died when only two days old due to problems in his digestive system.  Emily (nee Gray) and Alison grew up together locally and have been best friends since attending Sageston School and Greenhill School, Tenby. Alison felt she wanted to do something positive in George's memory and decided to compete in the 26.2 mile gruelling race around some of London's most notable landmarks in aid of BLISS, a charity which campaigns for improvements in neonatal care so that more babies survive and have the best quality of life. The charity ensures parents are supported as carers by providing a freephone helpline, specialist publications and a website. BLISS also supports the development of innovations in all aspects of caring for premature and sick newborn babies. The money Alison raises through the event on Sunday, April 13, will help to give babies like George a better chance of survival and will also ensure that loving parents like Emily and Pete receive the support and help they need to get through this difficult time. An information manager in the Worcestershire Substance Misuse Action Team, Alison has been busy clocking up the miles in training around her home near Worcester, and the pounds in a bid to reach a fund-raising target of £2,000. Friends have helped to raise money by holding car boot sales and coffee mornings, and Alison, a second dan black belt in Wing Chun Kung Fu, is running women's self defence seminars. She is charging for attendance and all the proceeds will go to her marathon fund. "People have been so generous with sponsorship so far, it really is overwhelming," said Alison, who will be competing in her first ever marathon. Alison is appealing for sponsorship and anyone who would like to make a donation can do so via her website http://www.justgiving.com/alison_rogers">www.justgiving.com/alison_rogers, by emailing her at [email protected]">[email protected] or sending a cheque to Alison, c/o Oakley Rose, Thomas Chapel, Begelly, Kilgetty.
