A Pembroke Dock man had a lucky escape on Monday when lightning struck the building where he was working.

Robin Flemming was at work on a lathe in the workshop of the family-run Pier Engineering on Pier Road when lightning struck the building at around 12 noon.

"There was a big blue flash and Robin was thrown six or seven feet across the room," explained his father Bob, of Upper Lamphey Road, Pembroke.

"We're not sure where the lightning actually hit, but if it didn't hit us directly, it was very, very close

"A customer of ours was just pulling up outside when the lightning struck and they said that the sides of their van expanded and contracted as it hit.

"Robin was extremely lucky, there's not a mark on him," Mr. Flemming continued.

"We think it was because he was in the middle of a job and had a good grip on the turning wheel of the lathe. If there had been less contact there may have been more of an arc.

"It's possible the lightning travelled down through the earth wires. Robin had a very lucky escape."

It was business as usual for the firm on Monday afternoon, although they did have one legacy of their unexpected bolt from the blue.

"The fax machine's LCD readout is completely broken," said Mr. Flemming. "All our equipment at the workshop, like the computers, are surge protected and are undamaged, but while the fax works, we can't read the numbers anymore!"
