Already in the final of the West Wales Cup, Manorbier's girl footballers took a step closer to a cup double by beating Llangyfelach 4-2 after extra-time in the league cup.

Playing in perfect conditions at Llangyfelach, Manorbier took an early lead through an Angharad Jenkins trademark in-swinging corner.

Llangyfelach responded very quickly and not only equalised, but started to dominate the game.

Unusually for Manorbier, there was no composure in the middle of the park and the usual through ball to Mari Griffiths was being stifled by the excellent Llangyfelach sweeper, Sam Beynon.

Pressure began to tell and the home team eventually took a deserved lead.

It looked like Manorbier were on their way out when Molly Furnival-Doran fired in a long-range effort in the 83rd minute.

Extra-time saw Manorbier re-gain their composure and they started to stamp their authority on the game. They took the lead through Rachel Hughes early in the first half and secured the tie with a fourth through Mari Griffiths in the last five minutes.

Llangyfelach might consider themselves to be unlucky on this occasion, while Manorbier picked up a 'get out of jail' card.

Manorbier Under 16s are sponsored by The Sports Council for Wales and Tesco.

Under 14s secure cash injection

The newly-formed Manorbier Under 14 team have managed to secure a grant through the Sports Council for Wales Community Chest Scheme.

The scheme, which is designed to encourage more people to become more physically active more often, will be used by Manorbier to provide training facilities and equipment for their young side, giving them the opportunity to experience new training techniques such as high-energy, high-cardio workouts.

Manorbier coach, Gerry Rigb,y paid tribute to the Sports Council.

"This sort of forward-thinking is exactly what's needed if we are to address the health and fitness of our children and young adults," he said.

"This generous grant means that small clubs like Manorbier can offer first class facilities and first class equipment to our developing young players."
