A cliff faller was airlifted to hospital after an accident at a popular South Pembrokeshire beauty spot.

St. Govans Coastguard Rescue Team, supported by Tenby, Castlemartin, Manorbier and Caldey Coastguard officers, together with the South Pembs. sector manager, Tenby RNLI's all-weather lifeboat and a rescue helicopter from RAF Chivenor, went to the aid of the faller at approximately 2 pm on Sunday.

The 37-year-old man from Barnet, North London, and climbing with the Gloucester Climbing Club, had already completed a couple of climbs at St. Govans Head when, as he was tackling a third climb, some of his equipment became dislodged from the cliff face by him losing his footing and he fell some 30-35 feet to approximately 100 feet above the sea.

The man was duly stabilised and the rescue helicopter was called to airlift him to hospital.

The helicopter crew winched the injured climber from his precarious position and flew him to Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest, where he was treated for neck and shoulder injuries.

Fortunately, he was correctly attired for climbing and his helmet save him from serious head injuries.
