To help kick-start this year's 'BIG recycle/yr ailgylchu MAWR' campaign, Pembrokeshire County Council has teamed up with Waste Awareness Wales (WAW) to encourage everyone to recycle more of their household waste - from metal cans and glass bottles to newspapers and cardboard - and to compost kitchen and garden waste.

ITV football presenter, Gabby Logan, is putting her face to the high profile national campaign, which begins across the UK on Monday, June 5. During the week, activities throughout the UK will surround this year's World Cup, given that the amount of waste we produce shoots up during major sporting tournaments.

Pembrokeshire County Council is urging householders to recycle in whatever way they currently can. A total of 43 per cent of householders currently receive the orange bag scheme, there are over 100 recycling banks throughout the county and six civic amenity and recycling centres. It is the council's mission to ensure recycling becomes a way of life and is convenient for everyone. To do this plans are currently in place to improve the recycling infrastructure and by the end of this year a new materials recycling facility will be developed. This will provide the county with the capacity to store, sort and compact more recyclate so that we can then plan for the expansion of our recycling services.

Commenting on her own recycling habits, Gabby Logan said: "I'm thrilled to be supporting 'the BIG recycle', because my family and I are already keen recyclers. We always use our council's doorstep collection service, and try to shop sensibly to buy recycled or recyclable goods and packaging."

Council cabinet member for environment and transportation, Clr. Brian Hall commented: "We're delighted to join up with Waste Awareness Wales to promote recycling at this important time. A lot of waste is created at events and over the summer period so this is an excellent way of highlighting the fact that we can all do more to help raise Wales' recycling rates."
