Fundraising for this year's Macmillan Cancer Support 'World's Biggest Coffee Morning' started in earnest last Thursday, when a cake sale at Valero Pembroke Refinery raised £1,000 for the charity.

Members of the Macmillan Cancer Support Pembrokeshire Committee, along with fundraising manager Sue Reece and Macmillan intern Megan Gullam, sold coffee, tea and homemade cakes to staff at the refinery as well as carrying out a bucket collection on site. The whole event also played out across Radio Pembrokeshire to launch Macmillan Coffee Morning activities across the county, leading up to the day itself today (Friday).

Donations from the cake sale and bucket collection raised over £800 on the day, with Valero making up the total to £1,000.

Sue Reece said: "This is an amazing result that does so much to highlight Macmillan's 'World's Biggest Coffee Morning'. This year looks set to be bigger than ever, with hundreds of events organised across Pembrokeshire. The staff at Valero have shown how easy it is for people to set up their own coffee morning activities, and help us towards our goal of raising £15 million from the 'World's Biggest Coffee Morning'.

Valero public affairs manager, Stephen Thornton, said: "Pembroke refinery staff have once again shown how committed and generous they are with this fantastic amount raised for Macmillan Cancer Support, which is also our 'Charity of the Year' in 2013. We would encourage as many people as possible to get involved to raise vital funds for Macmillan, who do such important work for those living with cancer and their families."
