Many people take on the Ironman challenge to prove their fitness, others take on the challenge in order to raise much-needed funds for a charity close to their hearts.
Mary Charles from Milford Haven did just that and raised £1,313 for Macmillan Cancer Support. Macmillan assisted and gave invaluable support to her father and mother during the last few months of their lives.
Although Mary, a member of Pembrokeshire Yacht Club rowing club, was already extremely fit, Ironman 2017 did present her with some doubts as to whether she could complete the course. The swimming and cycling elements were no problem, but running did present a challenge and in her own words: “I had to learn how to run.”
On the day, the weather conditions were not favourable, the second lap of the swim was rough and the bike ride was completed in wet and windy conditions.
The run was a battle and Mary had doubts whether she would be able to finish, but with the help of other athletes and the enthusiasm of the spectators, she did just that, completing Ironman 2017 in 16 hours and four minutes.
Running up the red carpet and hearing the words “Mary Charles you are an Ironman” from her smiling husband was music in her ears.
Mary would like to thank friends and family, PYC and Julie and Tricia for helping her raise the money for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Date for your diary: February 3 - Macmillan Rocks at the Torch Theatre.
