Councillors paid tribute at Thursday's meeting of Pembroke Town Council to Mr. David Scott who retired recently from the post of mace bearer to the town council. During his 28 years service, he carried out his duties in an exemplary manner at many civic events, including the official opening of the annual Michaelmas Fair and Civic Sunday. The mace is an emblem of the power and dignity of the Mayor and of his authority and the office of mace bearer has a long history and as the title implies, this officer carries the mace before the Mayor. Originally, the mace was a weapon of defence and is accordingly the emblem of authority of the Mayor, therefore, he/she immediately precedes the Mayor in all civic processions. As a result of Mr. Scott's retirement, the council is now seeking a replacement and anyone interested in performing this prestigious role should apply in writing to Hugh Colley, town clerk, at Pembroke Town Hall.
