Sir,
I cannot remember exactly how long ago it was, but it was a few years ago now, on this same day, that you were kind enough to carry a plea from me in your 'lost and found' column to the effect that I had lost my memory.
One kind reader did in fact telephone to say he had found it and asked what the reward would be for returning it. Who it was I am afraid I cannot remember, or whether he did in fact return it.
If he did, I am more sorry than I can say that I have lost it again, and would once again plead for help if you can spare the space in your highly esteemed, respected and valued publication.
I live in hope because I seem to remember that when I was young they used to reckon that a little bit of sympathy was worth a lot of pity, and a little bit of flattery would get you anywhere. Thanking you in anticipation, as they also used to say when I was young, I think. But don't quote me.
Roscoe Howells,
