The Joans Club held their Christmas dinner at the Giltar Hotel last week, which had been beautifully decorated, giving a lovely festive feeling to what turned out to be a most enjoyable afternoon.
Miguel and his staff are to be congratulated on the way they bring the spirit of Christmas to their guests.
Mrs. Clarice Upham, club leader, welcomed the Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Caroline Thomas, and thanked her for attending, although she could only stay for a short while, having council business to attend to.
Mrs. Upham also welcomed Mr. Brian Hodder, club president, and Mrs. June Hodder, Rev. Nanette Lewis-Head, minister of St. Johns, Mrs. Ruth Williams and her camera!, and past member of staff, Mrs. Amanda Hancock.
She also welcomed Mr. Steven Reed, community services manager for South Wales.
Mrs. Upham then thanked members of staff, whom she said were the backbone of the club, always reliable and ready to help in any way, namely Mrs. Jean John (secretary), Mrs. Mair Poole (treasurer), Mrs. Nell Williams (librarian). Also Mrs. Betty Lloyd (club member), who can always be relied on in times of need.
Mrs. Jean John gave her report on the club's chosen charity, 'Ty Hafan'.
She said the ladies had collected just under £100 by putting their odd coppers in a tin each week.
Mr. Steven Reed then announced that he had come on a very important mission, to honour two ladies who between them had given 52 years of service to the WRVS.
Mrs. Jean John was presented with a long service medal given for 15 years, but had served 19 years.
Mrs. Clarice Upham, who had already received a medal, was presented with a clasp and rossette for 27 years, but had actually served 33 years.
Both ladies were presented with a bouquet of flowers by Mr. Reed.
Brian and June Hodder, who gave everyone a little gift, were in turn the recipients of chocolates and wine from members of the club. Phyllis Jones gave all the helpers a gift for members.
Reeves Calendar company provided a calendar for everyone.
Then it was down the stairs for a sing-a-long and dancing, with music provided by Paul.
Mrs. Gwen Gilson delighted everyone with her rendering of the very old ballad 'In my little Alice blue gown' beautifully sung by this 84-year-old with a voice that any teenager would be proud of. A really wonderful end to a magnificent afternoon.
