The song cycle ‘let me tell you’ for soprano and orchestra, with words by Manorbier author Paul Griffiths and music by the Danish composer Hans Abrahamsen, will be performed at the Proms this coming Saturday.

The concert in the Royal Albert Hall can be heard live on Radio 3 starting at 7.30 pm.

The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra will be conducted by their new music director Mirga GraÏinytò-Tyla, making her Proms début. The first woman to hold a top position with a major British orchestra, she is already very popular with international audiences.

Her programme begins with the overture to The Magic Flute, Mozart’s joyous fable of hope and renewal, which is followed by ‘let me tell you’, with Tchaikovsky’s passionate Fourth Symphony after the interval.

The concert also marks the first Proms appearance by celebrated Canadian soprano Barbara Hannigan. She prompted the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra to commission ‘let me tell you’, and has already sung it in 10 countries.

A recording of the Proms performance will be televised on BBC4 on Sunday week, September 4.

Earlier this week, the CD recording of ‘let me tell you’, by Winter and Winter, was announced winner of the 2017 Gramophone Award for contemporary composition. The ‘British Grammy’, now in its 40th year, is widely regarded as at least the equivalent of the American Grammy and is often referred to as the Oscar for classical music.

Winners are selected by critics for Gramophone magazine and members of the industry, including broadcasters, retailers, arts administrators and musicians.

Other awards conferred on ‘let me tell you’ include the Royal Philharmonic Society Award and the Grawemeyer Award.
