A BROTHER and sister team from Wiseman's Bridge were among the talented young Pembrokeshire performers who won their way onto the stage the Urdd National Eisteddfod in north Wales last week.

Saxophonist Talfan Jenkins reached the stage to become the outright winner of the year six and under woodwind section, while Siriol was third in the years seven to nine piano competition.

But it was a close thing for Talfan, aged 11, a pupil at Narberth Primary School. Sunny weather and a bank holiday caused a six-mile logjam of traffic on the first day and Talfan had to walk the last three miles to the eisteddfod site with his saxophone on his back to reach his competition.

"I really thought I wasn't going to make it at one point, the road just seemed to go on and on, but it was worth it in the end," said Talfan, who also scooped first prize in the eisteddfod's musical composition section for year six and under.

Taught by Sharalyn Jenkins, he is a previous winner of the overall musician's prize at the Chevron (now Valero) Pembrokeshire Schools Music Festival and is the current Whitland and Narberth Rotary Young Musician of the Year. He has also won prizes at the Abertawe Festival for Young Musicians in Swansea.

As well as her piano success, Siriol, a pupil of Julie Garnham, won second prize in the Urdd musical composition competition years seven to nine. Among her previous achievements are winner of the open piano competition at the Valero Pembrokeshire Schools Music Festival at the end of last year and prizes at the Abertawe Festival for Young Musicians.
