A local stamp is already being applied to the flagship Landscape Gallery on which work has begun at St. Davids. Pembrokeshire contractors, Carreg Construction, of Croesgoch, have moved on to the Grove site and already 15 employees, all from the local area, are working on the project. Last week, representatives of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority and Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales, the lead partners in the project which has been part-funded by the European Union's Objective 1 Programme through the Welsh Assembly Government, paid a site visit and were shown around by Andrew Phillips, director of Carreg Construction. Paul Loveluck, president of the Museum Trustees, and Michael Houlihan, the director general, were joined by Clr. Simon Hancock, chairman of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority, and authority member, Clr. John George, of St. Davids. Andrew Phillips told them that the Gallery project offered a tremendous challenge. The new building would include cutting edge sustainable technology and materials, including sourcing heat from underground. The current workforce would increase to nearer 40 as the project developed, including sub contractors, and the majority would be local labour, he added. • The contract is worth over £3 million and will build on the award-winning Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Visitor Centre at The Grove. • The crescent-shaped building will incorporate galleries interpreting Pembrokeshire's landscape and heritage through a rolling programme of exhibitions based on the treasures in the National Collections and beyond. A new enhanced Visitor Centre will also be included. • Opening is planned for summer 2008.
