A number of teams took a break from the rigours of league football over the weekend to compete in the first round of the West Wales Cup.

Teams hate and like playing in the competition in equal measure. They hate it because a good run in the competition can play havoc with the number of games they play each year and like it because it gives them a chance of an away game against teams with interesting sounding names, not to mention the opportunity to socialise in places they would possibly never visit.

It can be doubly frustrating, therefore, to be drawn at home; no chance of an away trip to work on team bonding for starters, and players risking injury and such like from playing too many games.

Narberth need not worry, however, as their attempt at cup glory and therefore a coach trip away up the M4 has been curtailed for this season at least, so they will have no concerns about player burnout as the season progresses.

Drawn at home against Cwmfelin Press, the Bluebirds lost 3-1 against the Swansea-based side, Ashley Williams scoring the only goal for the home side in his team's defeat.

Pendine were another side to crash out of the competition as their defensive frailties were evident for all to see in their 9-1 home defeat against Carew in a sorry afternoon for the Seagulls.

Tenby produced their finest display of the season to defeat Penlan 4-1 away from home. Never an easy place to play, the youngsters of Tenby coped admirably with the physical presence of the home side to gain a passage through to the next round.

St. Florence were involved in a high-scoring tussle at home against FC Nedd, yet lost the contest 8-3.

Because of the West Wales Cup, Kilgetty and St. Clears had a weekend off, but no such luxuries for Narberth seconds as they travelled to Merlins Bridge to take on their seconds. It proved to be a good trip for them as they made hay in the late summer sunshine to win 3-0.

Lawrenny entertained Johnston seconds and showed little mercy on the visitors as they racked up a 7-1 victory. Joe Kidney, Owen James and Dean Morris all finished with a brace apiece, with Sam Davies grabbing the other.

Manorbier United were unable to gain any points from their home clash with Pembroke Boro as they lost 4-2. Ben Hall and Neil Lane scored for the home team in their second defeat of the season.

Tenby seconds lost by the same margin as they succumbed to Pennar Robins, with Tom Baker scoring twice for the homesters.

Sam Harts scored twice for Carew seconds, yet his efforts were not enough to prevent Fishguard Sports from winning 5-3 away from home. Tom Scourfield scored the other goal for the home side in a losing cause.

Saundersfoot Sports' second string, meanwhile, drew 1-1 away at Milford Athletic.

Manorbier United's seconds were unable to prevent Fishguard Sports' reserves from winning 5-2 at home, yet Rob Sawyer and Gavin Evans can be happy with their efforts as both scored for the visitors.

There was no joy for Lawrenny seconds either as they went down 4-0 away at Hundleton.

Kilgetty seconds were in action at home against Letterston, yet they couldn't prevent the away side from winning 2-1. Karl Thomas scored the home team's only goal as they slumped to their sixth loss of the season.
