There were only a handful of football matches played throughout Pembrokeshire on Saturday and St. Clears would have wished they were one of the teams forced to postpone theirs as they travelled to Hundleton and lost.
It was the Saints' first league defeat of the season and one that would have rocked their confidence heading into the Christmas period. It is said that every cloud has a silver lining, though, and Saints 'keeper Jason Owens believes this result will help them in the long run.
"We didn't expect to lose this one, that's for sure, but we did and it's disappointing. In saying that, we need to be consistent throughout the season if we are going to get promoted and this could have been the reality check we needed."
Hundleton were 2-0 up at the break, with the heavy conditions not helping the Saints play their usual brand of free-flowing attacking football. They came to terms with the quagmire conditions slightly better in the second half and, although they went further behind, two quick goals by Eddie Wiggins and Sam Thomas reduced the deficit to 3-2 heading into the final quarter.
Try as they might, no further goals were forthcoming as Hundleton were awarded a penalty as the minutes ticked by and profited from it to put the game beyond doubt and condemn St. Clears to a loss they were not expecting.
Carew Seconds entertained Goodwick United and they, too, would have probably liked to have called the game off as they were subjected to a 7-0 defeat at the hands of the visitors.
Meanwhile, Lawrenny Seconds are through to the next round of the Division Five Cup after they drew their first round second leg tie with Haverfordwest Cricket Club 1-1. Despite the draw, Lawrenny won 11-2 on aggregate and were far the better side throughout, with only the conditions preventing them from another convincing win.
"We were definitely the best team," said John Beff. "The conditions were awful on Saturday and made it very difficult for both sides, but we definitely deserved to go through overall."
Lawrenny's goal was scored by Mike Beynon early in the second following a goal-less first half and, although the home team equalised soon after, the result was never in doubt as Lawrenny were always in control.
