Division One

Carew 3 Narberth 1

Narberth missed a chance to go top of the league on Saturday after this defeat against Carew, especially with leaders Monkton losing for the second week in succession. Played in quagmire conditions, both teams served up an appetising feast of football, with the home side smiling more at the end of the day. This year's championship looks set to become one of the most keenly contested seasons for well over a decade. At the turn of the New Year, it looked as though it was going to be a two-horse race, but with Carew winning, they have thrown their hat into the ring; for if they win their remaining games, they could be crowned champions. "Carew looked sharp," said Narberth manager Paul Phillips. "For the first 20 minutes they were all over us and probably deserved the win, but I felt that when we scored in the second half, we could have snuck a draw." Carew were indeed very sharp for the first quarter of the game, although Raff Barnett did have a chance to put Narberth ahead, before Tom Meirion and Mike Boswell gave the home side a 2-0 interval lead. Narberth reduced the deficit with a goal through Mike Beynon, but James Thomas made it 3-1 with a superb goal near the end. Carew 'keeper Ian Kerrison was full of praise for his team mates saying: "We showed what a good team we are today, we played really well, hopefully we can keep this up now and challenge for the league. It's going to be tough but we're turning into a tough team to beat, especially at home."

Division Two

Saundersfoot 2 Pendine 6

Pendine continue to impress in Division two and Saturday was no exception. They produced yet another assured display to overwhelm the Seasiders on their home patch. The first half was a close affair, with Pendine sneaking a 2-1 interval lead through goals by Rob Waters and Justin Blewitt; Luke Wallace scoring for the home side. After the break, though, and it was one-way traffic. Waters scored the third, with Blewitt grabbing the fourth with a well-struck penalty, but not before Danny Caine had reduced the deficit to make it 3-2. Once the fourth went in, Saundersfoot sensed there was no way back for them as Rob Thomas scored the fifth before Luke Ormond completed the rout with a spectacular sixth and final goal. "It was another great performance," said Justin Blewitt. "We're scoring the goals now that we were missing early on in the season and once the fourth went in you could see the heads of the Saundersfoot players dropping. We're on a roll and that's good to see."

St. Clears 2 Pembroke Boro 1

St. Clears are having a strange season to say the least. One minute they are up, the next they are down, usually after playing well, but unable to convert their chances. Well, on Saturday, that changed as manager Mark Snelling witnessed a poor performance by his team, although the result was anything but. "This was without doubt the worst performance of the season," he said. "The second half was especially bad, but I can't complain, we won the game and that's all that matters. In a strange kind of way, it's nice to play that badly and win; maybe it proves to us that we are better than our results have shown." The visitors had the upper hand in the first half, although the 1-1 score didn't reflect that, Sam Thomas netting one for the Saints and James Kitts was on target for Boro. It looked as though a draw was the preferred result, especially with the pitch continuing to cut up, but with five minutes to go, Ollie Thomas unleashed a thunderous shot from 30 yards, which flew into the back of the net and the three points belonged to the home side.

Division Three

Lamphey 1 Manorbier United 1

On an afternoon more suitable for ducks, these two teams contested a game with each other and also the muddy surface. Lamphey began the stronger against the wind and created several half chances in the opening minutes, Manorbier found their range with shots on target, but were unable to trouble the eccentric home 'keeper. On the half hour, Manorbier gave away possession on halfway and were punished when a break down the right led to Anthony Webb firing across goalkeeper Mike Brown to give the home side a deserved lead. Playing a against the wind in the second 45, and in deteriorating surface conditions, the leaders of division three at last found their stride with opportunities for Ben Hall, brother James and Adam Thorne to level. Midway through the second half a break on the right wing led to the 'secret squirrel', Adam Thorne, continuing his amazing scoring form with his second goal since his return from injury. Both sides had chances to win it late on, but with the pitch making passing a nightmare in the middle, an even result was a fair end of match outcome. For the visitors, Jamie Robinson created well up front, Mike Brown had a dominant game in goal and Paul Maytum was muddy marvellous!

Newport Lions 3 Lawrenny 5

Notoriously slow starters, Lawrenny got out of the box quickly in this match and played quality football from the kick-off. After 30 minutes, the visitors took the lead when Mike Jolly struck a powerful swirling shot from 20 yards. The lead was increased before the interval by Stefan Jenkins, who ran onto a long ball to find the back of the net. Immediately after the interval, Mike Howe followed up after two attempted scoring shots had been blocked and was on hand to score the third goal for Lawrenny. It was a day to remember for Stefan Jenkins, who scored the fourth Lawrenny goal when he turned and shot from 25 yards to find the top corner. Jenkins completed a fine hat-trick when he was on hand to finish off a good cross by Chris Beff. Lawrenny rested on their laurels and introduced some substitutes after 35 minutes and their form fell away. An own goal reduced the deficit for the Lions who scored their second when Dean Drummond was on hand to nod in the ball from close range after a free-kick from the halfway line had struck the crossbar. The Lions also had a goal disallowed for offside, before Dean Drummond scored his second. With just two goals separating the teams, it was all to play for in the closing stages, with the Lions attacking and Lawrenny clinging on to their lead of two goals. Keeper Geraint Nicholas made his debut for Lawrenny first team after some impressive displays this season for the Seconds. He pulled off one outstanding save and generally had a good all- round game in goal. Chris Beff and Stefan Jenkins formed an effective strike partnership up front and there were good performances in defence by Robert Williams and Andrew Cole Junior.

Reserve Division Cup -third round

Kilgetty 1 Herbrandston 2 (after extra-time)

Kilgetty's chances of winning the Reserve Division Cup have disappeared for another season at least after their heroic performance against Herbrandston ended in defeat. If the game had finished with 45 minutes gone, Kilgetty would have won, as they led 1-0 going into the break and deservedly so. They played the more attractive football and they were certainly the most dominant team. They created plenty of opportunities with three or four standing out as really goal-scoring chances. However, they only went ahead through a Rob Beynon penalty which he took well; shame then that he didn't repeat the dose in the second half when another penalty came Kilgetty's way. The home team's hopes of a win went astray with that missed kick as their heads began to drop and Herbie took control. They equalised soon after through Matthew Hearne and the game went into extra-time. If the Kilgetty heads were down after this penalty miss, then they were dragging on the floor minutes into the first period of extra-time as Herbie scored again, when Hearne bagged his second goal of the match. The pitch resembled a mud-bath as the game went on and football became increasingly difficult to play and Kilgetty had no way back in.

Reserve Division Two

Haverfordwest CC 0 St. Clears 3

Two goals from Anthony Howells and one from Nigel Price were enough for St. Clears to come away from Haverfordwest Cricket Club with a 3-0 win to their credit. In another assured display from the Saints, the result was never in doubt as soon as Howells scored the first, as the home side had no answer to the visitors' sleek brand of football. This win places St. Clears third in the league, although they have played a few more games than Prendergast Villa and Solva, who are first and second respectively.

Lawrenny 5 Fishguard Sports 2

This was a good performance by Lawrenny against a team who were five places above them in the league table. As a result of the win, Lawrenny have moved up one place in the table and are now tenth. The Lawrenny team raised their game with a number of regulars missing and wanted the result more in conditions, which at times were quite difficult with the rain and the mud. Blaine John gave Sports the lead after 25 minutes when he used his pace to run on to a ball from midfield to score the first goal. Jonathan Cole levelled the scores before half-time when he was on hand when a free-kick from the halfway line came into the box. After 10 minutes of the second half, Jonathan Cole gave Lawrenny the lead with a copycat goal when another long free-kick by Paul Edwards came into the slot. Midway through the second half, the visitors equalised when Rob Griffiths scored with a cross- come-shot. However, Lawrenny were not to be outdone and Jonathan Cole nicked another goal, to complete his hat-trick, again from a long free-kick taken by Paul Edwards, which Sports failed to clear. Rhys Jenkins then set up a goal from Andrew Collins when he ran the length of the field before slipping the ball to Collins who netted Lawrenny's fourth. Rhys Howells scored the fifth and final goal for Lawrenny to cap a fine performance for the team. Rhys Howells was a constant thorn up front for Lawrenny, Ian Jenkins played well in his holding role in midfield and Jonathan Cole was on target with his finishing each time he moved up midfield.

Manorbier United 6 Saundersfoot Sports 1

Saundersfoot Sports started quite well and played good football in the first 20 minutes. It was no surprise when the visitors took the lead with a goal by Paul Evans. However, Manorbier came back into the game to equalise and then scored two more goals to build up a healthy lead at half-time. In the second half, the Yellows scored three more goals to put the result beyond doubt. The six Manorbier goals were shared out, with Phil McWeeney, Mike Ryder and Adrian Atwell each scoring twice. For the young Saundersfoot team, the experience of Andrew Davies helped to keep the players focused and Shaun Jones had an excellent game at centre half. The win has moved Manorbier one place up the table into sixth position.

SolvA 5 Tenby 1

Tenby gave a gutsy performance in this top versus bottom of the table clash. At the start of the match, Solva were second in the league and are now in joint pole position with Prendergast Villa. The visitors arrived with something of a makeshift side, but played quite well, with a good solid performance in the first half. Tenby used the wind to their advantage and were one goal up at half-time when Nicky Glanville found the back of the net with a long-range shot. In the second half, the visitors gradually wilted and Solva scored five goals through Tim John, Richard Edwards, Andrew Plant, Gareth Jones and Craig Challonder. For Tenby, Nicky Glanville was prominent up front and the experienced Steve Williams held the midfield together. Young Billy Connors also battled well in midfield and former Tenby United rugby club captain, Mike Evans, had a steady game at the back, but had to leave the field through injury in the second half.
