West Wales Cup (second round)
Carew 4 Kilgetty 2
Carew may be having one of their finest seasons in division one for a number of years under new manager Micky Lewis, but they were pushed all the way by Kilgetty in the second round of the West Wales Cup. They eventually ended up 4-2 winners, but their second division opponents gave them a fright, especially in the first half when Andrew Cope's men could have scored more goals than their final analysis showed. Kilgetty went into the break 2-1 up, having dominated the home side to such an extent that they were creating chances virtually at will. Despite their dominance, it was the home side that scored first, thanks to a simple tap-in by Jim Thomas. Thereafter, it was all Kilgetty, as Nick Cope drew them level with a penalty and then Josh Bevan gave them the lead. In between the goals, Bevan and Cope both skimmed the bar twice, while on another occasion, Carew were indebted to Ian Kerrison for pulling them from the mire after he produced a wonder save from a shot by Cope. A stern interval talking by Lewis did the trick, though, and they equalised through Thomas, who then went on to complete his hat-trick to give them the lead once more. The fourth goal was scored by Dean Rossiter. Carew's job was made easier as the game went by as Kilgetty were reduced to nine men as Paul Hodge and Chris Fearson were dismissed, but Carew deserved their win in the end.
Narberth 1 Rockspur 2 (after extra-time)
What is it with Narberth and their performances in cup football? Their league form might be good, but throw them into any cup competition and they come unstuck. First they lost to Camrose in the Senior Cup and now they are out of the West Wales as the visitors went through courtesy of a goal deep into extra- time. Manger Paul Phillips was bitterly disappointed by the result, saying: "They were a physical side, but we didn't perform again. Anyone could have won really, but as both teams tired towards the end, it was Rockspur that snuck the goal. "You get no second chances in a cup game and it took a special goal to win it for them." David Gillard continued his fine form of late to draw Narberth level after Mathew Vickery had given the visitors the lead in the first half. Narberth then had Charlie Smith sent off for a second bookable offence and from then on the game went down hill. Try as they might, Narberth couldn't force another goal and a 25-yarder by Ashley Jennings gave Rockspur the win.
West End 3 Pendine 0
Pendine manager Justin Blewitt had no complaints after this defeat, although he did say that the scoreline flattered the home side a little. The Llanelli based outfit were always on top, but Pendine gifted them two own goals, one in each half and one of which was scored by Blewitt! "It wasn't a great game," he said." We weren't at the races really. We had to play Chris Hastings in goal in place of Adam Clapperton and, though he made some fine saves, we really missed Clapperton on the day." Pendine's other own goal was scored by Darren Rees, but that was deep into the second half and by then the damage had already been done.
Mumbles Rangers 1 St. Clears 0 (after extra-time)
St. Clears bowed out of this year's West Wales Cup after they conceded a goal within 30 seconds of the first period of extra-time. It was a cruel blow to Mark Snelling and his team as they produced one of their finest performances of the season to keep the home team at bay. "It was by far the best we have played all season. They are a Swansea League first division outfit, but we more than matched them. Hopefully we can now transfer it into the league where we desperately need some points." Let's hope that they can, as the Saints are languishing at the foot of Division Two, but if Sam Thomas, Nigel Thomas and Deian Glyn can reproduce the form they showed on Saturday, then Snelling's men could climb up the ladder with no problems at all. All three players went close to scoring but saw all of their shots saved or skim past the post in an unlucky afternoon for the visitors.
Division One
Tenby 1 Haverfordwest County 4
Acting Tenby manager Dene Hurlow described the match as "One of Tenby's better games this season. We had a couple of chances and battled hard, but we lacked that little bit of experience to make an impact. "Haverfordwest County took their goals well, but from a Tenby aspect, it was a much better performance and a better result than the away match earlier in the season." The visitors took a lead of one goal into the interval following a strike by Mathew Walters. Midway through the second half, Gethin Roberts extended the lead for County and the visitors scored again within minutes when Mathew Fox found the back of the net. Mathew Walters picked up his second goal to make it four for the visitors, but with 15 minutes left, Beau Pryor did well to control a cross from the right to pick up a consolation goal for Tenby. Once again Perry Broadhurst stood out for Tenby with his Trojan work in midfield.
Division Two
Saundersfoot Sports 6 Hubberston 0
Danny Caine's outstanding performance set up a big victory for Saundersfoot Sports over the visitors from Hubberston. Caine gave Sports the lead after eight minutes and Darren Umanee extended the lead with a goal from a direct free-kick. A header by Danny Caine picked up the third goal for Sports and the star Saundersfoot player completed a fine hat-trick before half-time. Although reduced to 10 men in the second half, Sports stuck to their guns and Danny Caine added two goals to his already impressive tally. It was a good team performance by Sports, with a quite breathtaking display by Danny Caine. Hubberston were a sporting team and kept going until the final whistle.
Division Three
Broad Haven 1 Manorbier United 5
Manorbier gained their second away win on the bounce with a superb display at Broadhaven. On a tight pitch, the yellows battled for supremacy in an even first half up the slope. Unfortunately, Manorbier had two goals disallowed in the first half, which meant that only a solitary goal from James Hall gave the visitors a one-nil lead at half-time. Clearly frustrated by the decisions, the Manorbier side, led by skipper Ben Hall, scored three stunning goals in the first five minutes after the restart. Not to be outshone by his younger brother James on this occasion, Hall senior thumped in two goals of great quality, one from 20 yards out and an even better free-kick into the top corner from 25 yards. Mike Ryder added another with a cool finish, before a goal from Broadhaven substitute Gavin Young pulled one back. Returning from holiday, Paul Maytum's warm legs helped him rise to head-in from a training ground like free-kick, to complete the scoring. An excellent team display, with Ben Hall and Ashley Murdoch the pick of the bunch for Manorbier in midfield.
St. Florence United 3 Lawrenny 0
St. Florence took the honours in this third division clash. Acting Lawrenny manager Barry Phillips said: "On the day, we could not compete and found it difficult to counter the short ball passing game of the St. Florence team. "St Florence deserved to win as we could not apply the necessary pressure. The Lawrenny players tried their best, but were up against a stronger St. Florence side." Lawrenny have five first team regulars injured at the present time, but even with a full strength side would have been hard pressed to stop the Saints on the day. Scott Smith gave St. Florence the lead when he latched on to a superb long ball by Brett Evans. In the second half, Austyn John increased the lead with a tap-in from a corner by Martin Prothero and then John repaid the compliment by crossing the ball for Ben Blake to score with a tremendous volley from outside the box. For St Florence, it was a good all round team performance, with the pin-point crosses of Brett Evans testing the Lawrenny defence and veteran Ben Blake showed his experience with a composed display.
Reserve Division One
Kilgetty 2 Milford United 4
It was a case of same old story for Kilgetty in reserve Division One as Barry Ormond's troops failed to convert the chance they created. The visitors went 3-0 up relatively quickly in the first half, but a stubborn fightback almost brought Kilgetty back into the game. Unfortunately, they could only score a goal in each half when their performance deserved better. Richard Griffiths headed in the first, while Sam Coleman grabbed the second midway through the second half. "We could and should have beaten them," said Ormond. "We had our chances, but just didn't put them away. We were good up front, but poor at the back and it's been like that all season."
Monkton Swifts 3 Carew 1
Carew remain top of the table, despite losing this match to third-placed Monkton Swifts. The visitors received a setback when influential player-manager Neil Morgan was forced to leave the field with a leg injury. Liam Stapleton, Robin Stanley and Jodey Hearn scored the goals to defeat Carew, who could only score one in reply, through new signing, Adam Johns from St Florence.
Neyland 2 Narberth 3
Narberth boss Nigel Thomas was delighted with the way his team performed as they came away from Neyland with a good, solid win. "We played really well, especially in the first half. It was a good team performance and I'm pleased with the result." Indeed he should be, as they were 3-1 up going into the break, with goals by Gavin James, Steve Williamson and Mike Ledger. Neyland pulled once back just before the interval and another in the second half, but Narberth were always in control and thoroughly deserved the points. Reserve Division Two
Hubberston 5 Saundersfoot Sports 2
Sports started quite well and created a couple of chances. However, Hubbeston caught the visitors three times on the break and were three goals up at the interval. Early in the second half, striker Thomas Spencer clawed a goal back for Saundersfoot, before Hubberston increased their lead with two more goals. Spencer picked up his second to complete the scoring for the afternoon. For Hubberston, Paul James netted twice, backed up by goals from Leighton Scale, Gareth Hughes and Adam Arnopp-Rees.
Lawrenny 0 Tenby 2
There is little to choose between the two teams in the league and neither team was able to score during the first half. Lawrenny fielded a very young team and four 16- year-olds were making their first appearance in senior football. Tenby took the lead in the second half following a well-worked move down the left which set up a tap-in for Gavin Kinsey. Lawrenny kept it tight for most of the second half, but the visitors increased their lead after 80 minutes with a header by the experienced Mike Cornick from a corner. It was a move which the Tenby team had been practising in training and a precision cross by Matt Broadhurst gave Cornick the opportunity to score. For Lawrenny, there were good performances by 'keeper Geraint Nicholas, right-back Rhys Howells, in his first game, and midfielders Ian Jenkins, Rhys Jenkins, Christopher Beff and Paul Jenkins. Tenby player manager Matt Broadhurst described the first half as fairly even and the second half as entertaining. Substitute Wayne Callan was the pick of the Tenby players with his second half performance, 'keeper Mark Reed did well to prevent Lawrenny from scoring and the back four of Ben McDonnell, Alan Morgan, Mike Cornick and Adam Brown were a solid unit.
Manorbier United 1 Prendergast Villa 6
Manorbier were given an insight into the levels that they need to strive to attain in order to climb up the table, as an excellent Villa side came away with the points after a convincing win. Manorbier battled well in the first half and were unlucky to be 2-0 down after 30 minutes. A solo effort from Jamie Robinson managed to pull one back before the break for the home side. The skill of the top side in the division was evident in the second half when four more goals by the visitors sealed the result. For Manorbier, Andrew Culshaw had an impressive all-round performance.
Pendine 4 Fishguard Sports 3
This was the second time the teams have met in the league this season and the results stand at one win apiece. When they last played, the Seagulls were on the wrong end of a 12-2 hammering, but a change around in the fortunes coupled with some outstanding coaching by manager Frank Roberts helped them come away with the points on Saturday. "It was a tremendous result," said Roberts. "They came down here and thought they would beat us again, but we're playing a lot better now and for the first time this season we played for the full 90 minutes." It was a good job that they did, too, as Fishguard came back from being 3-1 down at half-time and, despite playing the majority of the second half with nine men, they pushed Pendine all the way. The visitors took the lead midway through the first half, but a Gareth Kaye stunner quickly brought the Gulls level. Steve Thomas grabbed the second and then Steve Jones the third to give them an interval lead and this super frontline partnership produced another goal for Jones in the second half. Pendine had to survive some nervous moments as the Sports scored two more, but they finally held out much to Roberts' delight.
St. Clears 8 Hundleton 1
It was a day to remember for St. Clears' Seconds as they trounced Hundleton 8-1 at home. James Owen was the hero of the day in a complete team performance as he netted a fine hat-trick to go alongside goals from Andrew McCabe and Stuart Phillips, who both grabbed a brace, and a fine solo effort by Dorian Davies.
