WWFA Cup (Second Round)

Carew 0 Burry Port 1

Carew had a disappointing second round exit, going down by one goal against the visitors from Burry Port. Neither side was able to find the back of the net in the first half, although Carl Wainwright missed out on two scoring opportunities for Carew. It was one of those days when the passing did not go smoothly and as a result Carew's play did not flow. In the second half, Carew had two 'goals' disallowed and the visitors picked up the winner when Carew goalkeeper Ben Evans was unsighted. Although Carew applied the pressure in the closing stages, it was difficult to create chances and the Burry Port 'keeper pulled off a good save to prevent Carew skipper Daryl John scoring from a header. With the injured striker James Buckle missing, the Carew attack lacked their usual cutting edge.

Mumbles Rangers 3 St. Clears 2

Mumbles Rangers were a good side and the Saints did well to get back into the game, but were unable to draw level and pick up the winner. Rangers took an early lead from a corner, but Sam Thomas equalised for the visitors following a break down the left and some clever interplay between Steve Trevitt and Paul Edwards before Thomas was released. Paul Edwards had a chance to give the Saints the lead, but blasted the ball over the bar. In the second half, St. Clears had a lot of possession, but with 20 minutes of the match remaining, Rangers took the lead with a cracking goal and then picked up their third through a defensive error. With seven minutes of the match left, Jason Baxter scored a superb goal with a screamer into the top corner from a free-kick. For St. Clears, there were good performances by Sam Thomas up front, Steve Trevitt in midfield and by Craig Western and Owen Edwards in defence. Division One

Saundersfoot Sports 1 Narberth 8

A depleted Saundersfot team did well to hold the visitors to just two goals before the interval. Raff Barnett gave the Bluebirds the lead after 10 minutes from the penalty spot and he scored again midway through the first half after being put through by Wayne Howells. Gradually Narberth exerted control and six goals came after the interval. Raff Barnett completed an excellent hat-trick, before Richard Rattenberry clawed a goal back for Sports with a penalty. Eventually, the Saundersfoot resistance crumbled. Richard Nash made it four for Narberth after a goalmouth scramble and striker David Gillard hit a low drive across the goal into the back of the net after beating a couple of defenders. Dean Evans got the next goal for the visitors after playing a one-two with David Gillard and then Barnett picked up his fourth goal from close range. Richard Nash kept the best for last with a brilliant goal to end the game. It was a memorable passing movement involving Paul Phillips, Wayne Howells and David Gillard before Howells rolled the ball to Nash who hit an unstoppable shot. Saundersfoot battled hard and team manager John Watkins was delighted with the way that everyone stuck at it and gave one hundred per cent. Barry Phillips deputised for Daniel Brace in goal and helped to keep the score below double figures and the Saundersfoot midfield worked hard, especially Simon Cole and James Caine, while Steve Smith had a steady game at the back. As the scoreline suggests, everybody in the Narberth team played well and the evergreen Nigel Thomas showed his versatility by deputising in goal for Huw Davies.

Tenby 2 St. Ishmaels 3

Both teams showed their attacking flair with some quality exchanges during the first 20 minutes, but gradually the visitors got on top and were rewarded with two goals. The first from Paul Palmer came from a scramble in front of the goal and the second by Adam Davies was from a penalty. In the second half, Tish struck again with a goal from Steffan Harteveld. However, Tenby showed their mettle with a spirited second-half fightback. Skipper James Thomas led by example to score the first goal for Tenby and substitute Gavin Scotcher played a one-two with Steve Hanlon who went wide and then crossed the ball to Scotcher who was on hand to complete an excellent move with a goal. Both teams pressed hard and Tenby were unlucky not to have a share of the spoils. As the game went on, the Tenby players knuckled down and their second half performance was the result of a consolidated team effort. Substitute Gavin Scotcher made a difference in the second-half up front after Tenby had changed the formation following an injury to defender Steve Williams. James Thomas worked tirelessly in midfield and Lewis Hurlow had a brilliant game in goal.

Herbrandston 3 Kilgetty 1

Kilgetty travelled to Herbrandston in confident mood with two new players in the side as Jason Bridges and Russell Evans have transferred from near neighbours Saundersfoot. However, Herbie came out with all guns blazing and the Kilgetty players stayed in their blocks. After 10 minutes, Aja Galdo gave Herbie the lead with a header from a free-kick. Although Kilgetty were up against it for most of the first half, somehow the visitors kept the score down and four minutes before half-time Andrew Simms equalised. Mike Scale and Grant James won the ball in midfield and, after some interpassing, pushed it wide to Geoff Marsh, who crossed the ball for Simms to volley home. Just before half-time, Carlo Gianuzzi nudged Herbie in front. The ball had been played along the touchline and stopped in the longish grass. The Kilgetty defenders came to a standstill, but a Herbie player crossed the ball for Gianuzzi to stroke it in. The Kilgetty players had a roasting at the interval and to make matters worse found themselves another goal adrift after 10 minutes of the second half when Herbie scored again through Clive Marshallsay. Although Kilgetty did come back with a stronger second half performance, they were unable to add to their score. Jason Bridges came on for Duane Rossiter after 10 minutes of the second half and gave 100 per cent and Russell Evans looked steady in defence. The visitors suffered a blow when Grant James was forced to leave the field with an injured hamstring and could be out for a few weeks.

Division Two

Milford United 5 Pendine 0

Pendine travelled to Milford United and found the home team filled with very young and very fit players. The Seagulls met their match on the day and United took a lead of three goals at the interval following strikes by Mathew Charnley, Ashley Cleevely and Lee McNeill. Had it not been for the great work by John Roberts between the sticks, Milford could well have reached double figures, but had to be satisfied with two goals from Nick Woodrow in the second half. Apart from John Roberts, the only other Pendine player who could put his head above the parapet was Simon Evans in midfield.

Division Three

Lawrenny 3 St. Florence United 2

St. Florence had a great start and were two goals up after 10 minutes following well-taken goals by Paul Davies and Chris John. Lawrenny had been slow to start, but gradually forced themselves back into the game. Paul Edwards reduced the deficit with a header from a corner and Steve Lewis, enjoying a day off from playing rugby for Pembroke, equalised before the interval. In the second half, Lawrenny pressurised the Saints defenders and eventually picked up the winner through an own goal. Stephen Cole in the Lawrenny goal pulled off some good saves to earn the points and was forced to tip the ball over the bar twice in the last 10 minutes. It was a good team performance by Lawrenny, with Steve Lewis and Sean Allen both playing well up front.

St. David's City 3 Manorbier United 4

Midway through the first half Manorbier took the lead against the run of play when David Merriman scored after he ran on to a through ball from Terry George. City equalised through David Price, but the visitors went forward soon afterwards and retook the lead with an excellent right-footed drive from Paul Maytum. Toby Johnson equalised for City just before half-time. Midway through the second half St. David's regained the lead following a scramble in the penalty area when Toby Johnson scored his second goal. The goal by City inspired the visitors to attack more and with 15 minutes of the match left Manorbier were rewarded with an equaliser from David Merriman after an excellent midfield move. In the dying minutes of the game, a cross from the right was expertly headed home by David Merriman to give the visitors a well-deserved win, and for Merriman to complete a quality hat-trick. Skipper Ben Hall had an excellent game in midfield and Terry George was solid in defence.

Templeton 1 Angle 1

Mid-table Templeton were held to a draw at home to Angle who lie in second place in the table, three points above Templeton, although Templeton have four games in hand. Jamie Bradfield gave Templeton the lead after 30 minutes with a diagonal shot high into the back of the net. Just when it looked as if Templeton would pick up three points, Angle pinched the equaliser from a throw-in near the penalty area when Simon Lewis scored with seven minutes of the match left. On balance, a draw was a fair reflection upon proceedings as Angle never sat back and continued to come at Templeton throughout the game. For Templeton, Chris O'Connell stood out in midfield and Andrew Davies led the back four by example.

Reserve Division One

Camrose 10 Saundersfoot Sports 0

Following the transfer of some players to other clubs, the Saundersfoot team travelled to Camrose without any substitutes. In contrast, Camrose fielded a very strong side and the visitors were up against it from the start. The match was virtually all over by the interval, with Camrose seven goals up and three more were added in the second half. Saundersfoot team manager Chris Jenkins was full of praise for the players and said: "The boys showed today that there is still fine spirit in the side despite suffering such a heavy defeat. The boys have remained faithful to the club and with everyone adopting the same attitude we should turn the corner soon." Seven Camrose players got their names on the score-sheet. Adi Smith had a hat-trick, Phil James scored two and the other goals were scored by Adam Hawkins, Ian Cahill, Marco Siso, John Regan and Lee Carruthers. Goodwick United 6 Tenby 1

The final scoreline flattered the Goodwick team slightly as the visitors played very well in the first half and, in fact, took the lead through Phil Spindlove. However, United replied with a header from Stephen Rowe before the interval. In the second half, Tenby started well, but Goodwick went in front following a penalty by Gavin Robb. The visitors appeared to press the self-destruct button after the Goodwick penalty and for 20 minutes were on the back foot. During this period, United took full advantage of the situation to score four goals in quick succession, with Richard Morgan netting twice and Steve Lewis also picking up two goals. Tenby recovered and held firm for the remainder of the game as well as mounting the odd attack. Teenage striker Phil Spindlove and Johnny Badrock formed a lively duo up front. Kilgetty 3 Milford Athletic 1

Kilgetty played poorly for the first 20 minutes and were put under a lot of pressure by the visitors who created a number of opportunities to score. It came as no surprise when Athletic took the lead through Mathew Collins who found the back of the net from a short range half-volley when he received the ball from a free-kick. The goal spurred Kilgetty into action and Shamsul Ali drew the scores level with a left-footed shot after 25 minutes. Kilgetty continued to press and Anthony Bevan put Kilgetty one goal in front following a powerful run straight down the middle and teenager Nick Cope hit an instinctive half-volley from 30 yards to extend the Kilgetty lead before half-time. Strangely, no more goals were scored in the match, but Kilgetty kept things under control, although the Milford team continued to press and play attacking football. Athletic hit the bar with one shot and Kilgetty had some chances, but neither team was able to score. Kilgetty striker Barry Ormond posed problems up front with his pace and Adam Hughes had an outstanding game for Kilgetty in goal. Monkton Swifts 3 Carew 1

Carew made all the running during the first 20 minutes and should have been three or four goals up. Instead it was the Monkton team who took the lead when Ross Penniket scored with a well-struck shot and five minutes before the interval Dai Stanley made it two with a left-footed shot into the top right corner. At the start of the second half, Adam Chandler reduced the deficit with a speculative shot from outside the box. Play was fairly even for much of the second half, but Swifts had the last word through Paul Lacey who scored when the Monkton team took a free-kick quickly on the right and the ball came across to Lacey. The visitors played well in patches, but were too inconsistent to get into the game. Narberth 2 Merlin's Bridge 1

The Bluebirds were forced to battle hard for 90 minutes to pick up three points in this match and the ploy of playing five men in midfield worked well in the first half. Adi Jones gave the Bluebirds the lead with a shot from just outside the box into the top corner. For much of the second half, the Bluebirds were under the cosh, but with seven minutes of the match remaining, Adrian Howells was put through and drilled the ball low into the bottom corner to extend the lead for Narberth. The Bridge fought back with a goal from Paul Thomas, but the Bluebirds held on to the vital one goal advantage. Overall, it was a good team effort with Nigel Davies and James Stephens providing the cornerstone for the Narberth team at the back. Reserve Division Two

Johnston 3 Lawrenny 3

Lawrenny played quite well to earn a draw away to fourth placed Johnston. Gavin Peace gave Johnston the lead after 25 minutes, but Lawrenny replied with a goal by Wayne James who took advantage of a defensive error. Shortly before the interval, James extended the lead after running on to a through ball from Martin Lewis. At the start of the second half, Johnston came at Lawrenny very strongly and used the long throw-in to good advantage. Lawrenny found it more difficult to create scoring opportunities and after Jason Griffiths equalised for Johnston he scored his second goal to give Johnston the lead. However, with the clock ticking rapidly towards the end, John Bess equalised for Lawrenny following a good move down the left. For Lawrenny, John Bess stood out on the left side of midfield and Martin Lewis was solid at the back. Manorbier United 3 Clarbeston Road 2

Manorbier took the lead through James Hall, but Clarbeston Road equalised, before Manorbier regained the lead with a penalty by Austin John. Clarbie were also awarded a penalty before half-time, but Mark Skyrme pulled off a terrific save. Manorbier increased the lead with a goal from substitute Gavin Evans, who fired in a shot from close range, but Clarbie reduced the deficit to one goal. Nevertheless, Manorbier hung on despite some nervy moments. Ian Cather and Phil McWeenie both had good all-round games in midfield for Manorbier.

Pendine 2 Neyland 4

The Seagulls took the lead with a header from Stephen Jones but Nathan Warlow took advantage of some sloppy defence to equalise and another defensive error allowed Paul Davies to nudge Neyland in front. Pendine were on the back foot at the start of the second half after two goals from Shane Phillips. However, the Seagulls got back into the game and scored a second goal when Robert Thomas finished off a brilliant individual effort. The Seagulls played well enough to win, especially with their performance in the first half, but indifferent finishing cost them the points. Robert Thomas stood out on the right side of midfield for Pendine and looked to be the best player on the day from either team.

St. Clears 10 Solva 3

Thirteen goals were scored in an enthralling match at St. Clears where Solva were the visitors. The Saints were on top for the first 20 minutes of the game and took a two goal lead through Nick Hogben and Simon Bancroft. However, a couple of defensive mistakes allowed Solva back into the game and the visitors had the better of the last 20 minutes of the half and equalised after goals from Meredith George and Chris Moores. In the second half, the Saints had the benefit of wind advantage and regained the lead with a goal from Colin Reynolds. Three more goals were scored, one by Richard Edwards of Solva to reduce the home team lead to two goals, but the Saints dominated the latter stages of the match and scored five more goals. Colin Reynolds took his chances well and ended with six goals with three long range efforts and three tap-ins. Other goals were scored by Daniel Steele and Steve Aston. Colin Reynolds and Steve Aston formed an effective strike partnership, with Aston improving as the game went on. James Carnell and David Nicholas combined well in midfield and Nick Hogben was solid at centre-half.
