Senior Cup (first round replays)
Narberth 6 Broad Haven 0
As expected, the Bluebirds won their first round cup match at home to Broad Haven who have yet to record a win in Division Two this season. However, the visitors looked to be a far better team than a bottom of Division Two club and the Bluebirds did not have it all their own way by any means. The visitors were on fire for the first 10 minutes and it was only the agility of Narberth goalkeeper Huw Davies which prevented Broad Haven from scoring. After 20 minutes, Wayne Howells gave the Bluebirds the lead with a goal from 25 yards when he made the most of a defensive error and 10 minutes later David Gillard extended the lead when he cut in from the left and beat the 'keeper with a low shot. Before the interval, Narberth had made it three goals when Raff Barnett put David Gillard through and, although the initial shot by Gillard was saved, Gillard was on hand to head home the rebound. In the second half, Narberth improved and produced a better quality of football. Richard Nash scored the fourth goal, which was a real peach, after being put through by Wayne Howells. By this stage, the result was inevitable and Mathew Lewis drove the ball home after being put through by Jonathan Jones to increase the lead. When the Bluebirds were awarded a penalty, Raff Barnett put the ball over the bar, but he was soon to make amends with a good goal to bring the Bluebirds' tally to six. It was good to see David Gillard back in action again after a month away from the game through a combination of holiday commitments and injury. Huw Davies was outstanding in goal and there were good performances by Raff Barnett, Richard Nash, Wayne Howells and Richard Henton. Kilgetty 5 Hundleton 3
Kilgetty booked a place in the next round after getting the better of Hundleton in this eight-goal thriller. For the first 20 minutes, Kilgetty were on top. Duane Rossiter gave Kilgetty the lead after 15 minutes with a volley from 18 yards and Grant James extended the lead when he lobbed the 'keeper from 35 yards. Hundleton hit back and reduced the deficit after 13 minutes with a goal from Rob Jones. It was a ding-dong struggle and the teams exchanged penalties before half-time, with Duane Rossiter being on target for Kilgetty and Rob Jones picking up his second goal for the visitors. After 15 minutes of the second half, Grant James was put through but a Hundleton defender handled the ball on the line and was sent off. From the subsequent penalty, Duane Rossiter completed his hat-trick and five minutes later Geoff Marsh tapped the ball in from close range. Hundleton continued to fight back and Rob Jones completed his hat-trick for the visitors when he put the ball into the back of the net from the penalty spot. For Kilgetty, Andrew Sims played well up front and later in midfield and substitute Rob Beynon also held the ball well up front. Young fullback Jason Jones impressed impartial observers and skipper Luke Reynolds was solid at the back.
Division One
Carew 4 Saundersfoot Sports 1
Carew had the better of this local derby in the first half and dominated possession for 80 per cent of the time. The home team suffered a blow when star striker James Buckle was injured after 10 minutes and it was surprising in view of the amount of possession enjoyed by Carew that few chances were created. Carl Wainwright, Nielson Cole and Paul Bullock each came close to scoring, but Saundersfoot defended well and caught Carew on the break at times, with Jason Bridges getting close on one occasion. In the second half, Carew's work-rate was eventually rewarded, although Sports were on top during the early stages and Jason Bridges put the visitors in front when he ran on to a 30-yard pass from James Caine. He hit the ball low into the corner, but within five minutes Carew had equalised through Neil Morgan. The Carew player picked up the ball inside the Saundersfoot half and, after beating a couple of defenders, he finished off a fine individual move with a left-footed shot into the bottom corner. Within minutes, Carew were in front when Saundersfoot failed to clear and a cross by Richard Bullock fell to Sam Morgan who scored. Carew skipper Daryl John put Carew further ahead with a header from a Kieron Stone corner at the far post and the last goal came when Carl Wainwright crossed for Haydn Shapcott to shoot and for Sam Goodwin to score on the rebound. Although the Saundersfoot players would have been a little disappointed with their performance, the team pulled together and played well in patches. For Carew, it was a good team performance rewarded with four goals, with good performances by Paul Bullock in midfield and Neilson Cole at the back.
Tenby 0 Herbrandston 4
Tenby were handicapped when goalkeeper Lewis Hurlow received a red card for his second bookable offence and the visitors took advantage of the situation in the first half to score goals through Adrian Jenkins and Ajay Galdo. In the second half, Tenby tried to push forward, but were always up against it with a player short and, although they defended well, eventually something had to give. Not surprisingly, Herbrandston scored two more goals in the second half through Clive Marshallsay and Martin Langdon. There were some encouraging performances from the Tenby players, with 16-year-old Sonny Phillips playing well on the left side of midfield, James Thomas stuck at it throughout the afternoon in midfield and Ben Brookes was steady at the back.
Division Two
Johnston 3 St. Clears 2
This was a game which the Saints could have won, but the visitors did not always get the bounce of the ball and came away from Johnston without any points. Sam Thomas put St. Clears ahead following good work by Paul Edwards, but Adrian Moore equalised for Johnston. Ben Skudder picked up the second goal for Johnston from a throw-in at the start of the second half, but Sam Thomas picked up his second for the Saints to equalise when he was in position to score from the rebound following a shot from 25 yards by Alec Weston. With two minutes of the match remaining, the St. Clears players appealed for a penalty following an alleged handball. The penalty was not given and from the breakaway Johnston scored the winner through Ben Skudder. For St. Clears, Sam Thomas played well up front, Craig Weston and Deian Glynn were creative in midfield with Mark Snelling and Jason Baxter solid at the back.
Letterston 5 Pendine 1
Earlier in the season, the Seagulls won by five goals to one at home to Letterston, but in the return fixture the scoreline was reversed. The match was won and lost in the first half when Letterston scored four goals through Gareth Matthias, Nick Lawrence, Rob Couzens and an own goal as against Pendine's solitary goal, which came from a penalty by Justin Blewitt. In the second half, the Seagulls regrouped and defended well and only let Letterston through on one occasion when Stuart Lamb found the back of the net.
Division Three
Angle 1 St. Florence 1
Mid-table St. Florence did well to hold the leaders Angle to a draw. Simon Lewis scored for Angle, but his goal was cancelled out by that of Jamie Roberts for the visitors.
Lamphey 0 Manorbier United 8
Manorbier United picked up their third win of the season and have moved into second place in Division Three following this comprehensive win at Lamphey. On a glorious afternoon, the conditions at the Lamphey ground were ideal for football and there was little to choose between the two teams in the first half. The visitors kept the ball on the deck and played some good football, but were only rewarded with one goal when player-coach Rob Thomas scored from a corner. At the start of the second half, the lead was increased through an own goal and then Sam Reeve scored the third for the visitors. The goal was followed by two in succession from Chris Thompson, another by Josh Hawkes and the seventh came from a spectacular volley by Phil John. Ben Hall brought the scoring to an end with the eighth goal for Manorbier United. Rob Thomas was delighted with his team's performance and praised the players for their commitment. Speaking after the match, he said: "The team showed its bounce-back ability after a disappointing performance against St. Florence the previous week."
Lawrenny 2 Haverfordwest CC 5
The Cricketers from Haverfordwest were elated after their first win of the season and the result has taken them one point above Lawrenny in the league table. Lawrenny started the match brightly and Andrew Cole Jnr. put the home team in front with a well-judged header from a free-kick. The Cricketers equalised when Dai Davies scored with a deflection from a free-kick and 10 minutes before the interval Kim Harland put Lawrenny in front once again. However, on the stroke of half-time, Nigel Jenkins equalised for the Haverfordwest team with a rather scrappy goal from a corner. In the second half, Lawrenny fell away and the Cricketers showed their superior fitness to score three more goals through Nigel Jenkins, Simon Williams and Mathew Vaughan. The only bright spark for Lawrenny in the second half was when John Fuller came close to scoring by hitting the cross-bar.
Pembroke United 3 Templeton 1
The visitors created a lot of chances in the first half, with both Jamie Bradfield and Morgan Preece causing problems for the United defence. Templeton took the lead through a penalty by Wayne Scourfield after Mathew Preece was upended in the box. Although Templeton took the lead, the injury gave the visitors a knock, especially as Preece was taken to hospital for treatment to a shoulder injury. The good news is that the injury was not as serious as first feared and he was released from hospital on Saturday evening. Just before the interval, Wayne Boswell levelled the scores for the home team. The visitors lost their shape a little in the second half and suffered another setback when Joe Philpin was injured. The two injuries clearly affected the Templeton team and eventually the visitors succumbed when United scored twice with goals from Wayne Boswell and Paul Sly.
Reserve Division One
Camrose 2 Narberth 1
League leaders Narberth suffered their first setback of the season after eight straight wins. The result was unexpected, as prior to the match Camrose had not picked up any points, having lost every game. It was one of those days when the Bluebirds did not perform and Camrose provided stern opposition with a number of tall experienced players in their team. Defender Nigel Davies was unable to play for Narberth and his absence weakened the defence. The Bluebirds were under pressure from the outset and Camrose took the lead during the first half through a goal by Adi Smith. In the second half, Camrose got on top and widened the gap between the teams when Phil James scored with a header to the far post from a corner. Striker Peter Phillips clawed one goal back for the visitors from a goalmouth scramble and, although Narberth did have chances to equalise, the Bluebirds were unable to score. Narberth still lead the table, but are only three points ahead of Hakin United, who have two games in hand.
Herbrandston 4 Kilgetty 2
Kilgetty had the better of the first half and created a number of scoring opportunities. Striker Barry Ormond came close three times and eventually beat the 'keeper with a one-on-one situation to put the visitors in front. Shamsul Ail might have also scored for Kilgetty, although Herbie had their slice of misfortune when a shot hit the bar from a corner and the home team also had a goal disallowed for a foul throw. In the early stages of the second half, play was even, but Herbie equalised with a goal from Jim Bopp with a half-volley from 30 yards which found the top corner of the net. After a break down the left, Peter Frank nudged Herbie in front and then scored his second when he found the back of the net following a scramble after a corner. Kilgetty did have the satisfaction of scoring the goal of the match with a brilliant individual effort by Anthony Bevan, but missed out on a number of opportunities to equalise before Leigh Galdo put the game out of reach with Herbie's fourth goal in the closing stages. For Kilgetty, Luke Rowlands was dynamic in midfield and Mike Smith defended well at centre half.
Pennar Robins 5 Tenby 2
Despite trailing by three goals at the interval, this was a game where the visitors could have recovered to win. However, the Tenby team gave away too much ball at times and, although they played the offside trap, as yet the players have not perfected this ploy. Ray Probert gave the Robins the lead and a defensive error allowed Jack Stuart in to score the second goal and with a good shot before the half-time whistle Ray Probert scored the third goal for the Robins. Following a penalty at the start of the second half by Ray Probert, it was hard for Tenby to get back into the game, but there was a much-improved second half performance. Nick Webster Smith scored after good work by Scott Evans, but Ray Probert scored again for the Robins when he caught the Tenby team napping on the break. Tenby had the last word with a penalty by Perry Broadhurst and in fact the last 10 minutes of the game belonged to the visitors, but they were unable to claw back the three goals necessary to equalise. Ray Probert and Jack Stuart up front caused all of the damage for the Robins, but Scott Evans worked tirelessly for the visitors up front and Mo Sofan battled hard in the centre of defence for Tenby.
Saundersfoot Sports 1 Carew 2
Sports goalkeeper Barry Phillips kept his team in this game by pulling off some superb saves and when Sports scored in the dying moments, the momentum turned their way to set up a nail-biting finish. Carew held on to pull through and apart from the hectic closing stages, the visitors were in control for most of the match. Phillips gave notice of his intention to pull out all of the stops in the early stages of the first half, when he prevented Nick Scourfield from scoring with a good diving save, after Scourfield had struck the ball from the 18-yard box. Carew mounted a series of attacks and a precision cross by Seb Palin gave Matthew Birch an opportunity to score a goal with a well-directed header. Palin himself was on target just before half-time, when he extended the lead in fairly fortuitous circumstances, as he was in position to pick up a half-save by Barry Phillips. In the opening stages of the second half, Barry Evans looked to be in a position to score for Carew, but the move was stopped when a defender handled the ball. Seb Palin stepped up to take the spot kick and once again Phillips stole the show when he saved the penalty attempt. The visitors continued to have most of the game, but with three minutes of the match remaining, Luke Wallace picked up a partial clearance for Sports, and with a shot from 20 yards he rifled the ball into the top corner to set up the frantic closing stages. In retrospect, Carew deserved to win and showed their commitment by bouncing back after two defeats through a good team effort, especially by the midfield players. The players appreciated the way in which the game was refereed by Dean Boswell.
Reserve Division Two
St. Clears 3 Lawrenny 1
Neither team was able to make the breakthrough in the first half and, although the Saints had a lot of possession, Lawrenny looked to be steadfast in defence. At the start of the second half, Mike Howe gave the visitors the lead when he curled the ball around the Saints' 'keeper. St. Clears were not to be denied, however, after continuing to gain most of the possession and Colin Reynolds equalised with a good shot when he took advantage of a lapse in defence by the Lawrenny players. The goal lifted the Saints and the home team took the lead through David Nicholas, who scored when he picked up a cross from the right. Lawrenny had chances to equalise, but with 10 minutes of the match left, Steve Aston made the game safe for the Saints when he finished off a one-on-one to score the third goal for St. Clears. It was a good team effort by the Saints who, on balance, deserved to win. David Nicholas stood out in midfield and Marcus Leefe was a tower of strength at the back. For Lawrenny, Kyle Roberts played well in goal, as did David Cole at the back, together with Alun Evans.
Manorbier United 2 FishgUArd Sports 2
The visitors were one goal up at the interval following an excellent long-range effort. However, Manorbier equalised at the start of the second half following a brilliant solo effort by David Merriman who beat three defenders before deceiving the Sports' 'keeper. Fishguard got back into the game with a goal to take the lead after some rather scrappy play following a corner. However, Manorbier fought back to equalise with minutes left, through substitute striker Aaron Penniket. Manorbier took their goals well and generally it was a good team effort, with Adi Attwell being prominent in defence and John Grover in midfield.
