West Wales Association Cup (First Round)

Carew 4 Naval and Military 1

The visitors from Swansea arrived late and to compound matters took the lead from a close range header after 30 minutes. Carew had not started very well, although both Sam Goodwin and Richard Bullock came close to scoring. The goal gave Carew the necessary wake-up call and after playing some good football Carew equalised through a coolly taken penalty by James Buckle. It had been awarded when Keeron Stone slotted a free-kick into the box where Richard Bullock was pulled down. In the second half, Carew came out revitalised after being on the receiving end from some robust advice from team manager Gerald Hicks. Hugh Neale put Carew in front after five minutes after being put through by Paul Bullock and Neale beat both the fast offside trap and the 'keeper to score. For some reason, the visitors persisted with the offside trap and Carew were able to take advantage when the lead was extended by James Buckle after good work by substitute Brian Hall. In the last couple of minutes, Buckle completed a fine hat-trick when he went through some over-robust challenges to 'score', but instead of awarding the goal, the referee pointed to the penalty spot. Fortunately, Buckle was able to retain his composure to score again. It was a good team effort, with a brilliant performance by a popular 'Bucks', while there was also some good defensive work by Paul Bullock in particular in midfield.

Winch Wen 2 Narberth 2

This was an excellent game, which brought out the best in both teams as the Bluebirds raised their game to fight off their challenge of a top class Swansea league team. Craig Draper gave Winch Wen the lead with a shot from 25 yards and in the first half Narberth created more chances after playing some good football. The goals dried up until 10 minutes of ordinary time was left when Charlie Smith toe-poked the ball into the back of the net from a goalmouth scramble after a corner. In extra-time striker Julian Winston regained the lead for the home team with a header, but Narberth enjoyed playing with the wind at their backs in the second period of extra-time and Richard Nash equalised with a header after an excellent corner from Craig Hurst. Both teams had their chances, but in the end, a draw was a fair result. It was a good team effort from the Bluebirds, with Huw Davies being outstanding in goal, Charlie Smith reliable at the back and David Lee showed his versatility with good performances at both left-back and on the left side of midfield when he took over from the injured James Stephens.

Templeton 1 Resolven 2

A wet pitch caused problems even before the match started as Templeton lost Guto Davies with a cartilage injury after the warm-up session. Templeton took an early lead after three minutes when Morgan Preece was brought down after beating three defenders and Wayne Scourfield put Templeton in front. The visitors showed why they were one of the top Neath League sides with a series of attacks and eventually Resolven equalised and then took the lead before the interval. Although Templeton put in an improved display during the second half, it became increasingly difficult to create chances and of the chances which were created, none was taken. In the final analysis, Resolven deserved to go through to the next round. For Templeton, there were good performances by both Wayne Scourfield and Anthony Evans in midfield.

Johnston 4 Kilgetty 1

A lack of consistency cost Kilgetty this cup match at Johnston where the visitors failed to finish off chances in the first half after putting in a very good performance. Johnston scored on the stroke of half-time and then scored at regular intervals in the second half with three more goals. A header by Andrew Simms gave the visitors a consolation goal and did, in fact, reduce the deficit to just one goal, but Kilgetty heads dropped when Johnston scored their third and fourth goals. Kilgetty have been rather hot and cold this season and must introduce more consistency into their game throughout a match, although this is difficult to achieve without a settled team.

Ynystawe Athletic 10 Saundersfoot Sports 1

A depleted Sports team were no match for Ynys. The match was played in excellent spirit, but on the day the Swansea Valley team displayed the quality of their footballing skills and took a lead of six goals by the interval. Ynys added four more goals in the second half, but Jamie Morgan fought back with what was described as 'a most unusual goal' by the Saundersfoot team manager John Watkins. The visitors enjoyed their footballing day out of Pembrokeshire, despite being outplayed on the day.

Carway 0 St. Clears 5

The Saints had the edge in the first half and had a lead of two goals at half-time following strikes by Eddie Wiggins and Craig Weston. After the interval, the Saints pressed home their advantage with a brilliant second half hat-trick by Ron Groty. The Saints created more scoring opportunities, but the agility of the Carway 'keeper kept the score below double figures. There were good performances by Deian Glynn, supported by Mark Snelling in the centre of defence and Wayne John, who was pressed into emergency service as a goalkeeper on the day.

Division Two

Pendine 5 Milford United 5

Ten goals were scored in a match of fluctuating fortunes. Mathew Charnley scored two for the visitors, supported by Joff Lennon, Steven Hartley and Chris Thompson. For the Seagulls, Brazilian Ali De Freitas and Simon Evans both scored a brace of goals, backed up by a strike from Robert de Schoolmeester.

Division Three

Haverfordwest CC 1 Manorbier United 1

United played against the wind in the first half, but defended well, only conceding one goal. Simon Williams is the cricket club's opening bowler in the summer months and he opened the scoring for the Cricketers with a short range effort midway through the first half. Manorbier battled hard and were rewarded on the stroke of half-time with a goal by James Hall following a scramble in the box. Although United had wind advantage in the second half, play continued to be fairly even and no more goals were scored by either team. For Manorbier, Tom Christopher pulled off several outstanding saves in goal, Terry George played well in defence and Adam Thorne had another excellent game in midfield. Manorbier were unable to press on to score in the second half as some of the players were not able to produce their normal standard of play.

Lawrenny 1 Angle 2

Lawrenny produced a much-improved performance in this game and tried to play some quality football, despite being against the wind in the first half. The visitors scored twice in the first half, but Lawrenny came back strongly in the second half when they enjoyed wind advantage. With 20 minutes of the match remaining, David Hughes brought some hope to his Lawrenny team-mates with a goal into the bottom corner. However, although Lawrenny created some more scoring opportunities, they were unable to get the goal to equalise. Kim Harland made an impressive debut up front, Stuart Prosser was effective in midfield and Hugh Griffiths was solid at the back. The match ball was sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. Brian Jaques.

St. David's City 3 St. Florence United 2

St. David's City kept in touch with the Division Three leaders, although they were pushed close by the Saints in this match. Gareth Chalmers, Mathew Roberts and Jason Joyce got the goals for City, while Scott Smith and Jeffrey Evans were the players on target for the Saints.

Reserve Division One

Kilgetty 1 Hakin United 11

On a day where everything the Vikings tried came off, Kilgetty were unable to compete and were seven goals down at the interval. In the second half, Kilgetty played much better and did not make so many mistakes. If Kilgetty had been on target in the same manner as the visitors they could have clawed back five goals, but shots were off-target and chances not taken. The only home goal came from teenager Nick Cope with a header. Luke Rowlands, Kilgetty's second half substitute up front, created a number of scoring opportunities. However, it was Hakin's day and Aaron Owens scored six goals, supported by Adam Bayjoo with four and Robert Whitby with one.

Narberth 4 St. Ishmaels 1

The Bluebirds struggled in the first half, playing against the wind, and Tish looked the better team. It came as little surprise when Daniel Flynn put Tish in front with a goal after receiving a precision pass from Gareth McKeown. Conversely, the goal spurred the Bluebirds into action and teenager Harry Allen equalised with a goal inside the far post after being put through by Adrian Howells. In the second half, Narberth started playing the ball on the floor and took control. Adi Jones put the Bluebirds in front with a header from a well-taken free-kick by Robbie Brooks from the left. Three minutes later, Adi Jones picked up his second goal when he beat the Tish defenders to pick up a cross from Harry Allen. As the match went on, the Bluebirds played better and better and Harry Allen picked up the fourth goal after the original shot by Adi Jones was parried. Just before the final whistle, Robbie Brooks received a red card following a disagreement with the referee and the Bluebirds were reduced to 10 men. Although the win was not one of Narberth's better performances, nevertheless it was a good sign that the Bluebirds were able to maintain their winning sequence. The experienced pair of Nigel Thomas and Adrian Howells stood out in midfield.

Tenby v Camrose

This fixture was postponed as Camrose were unable to field a team on the day.

Saundersfoot Sports 1 Milford Athletic 3

Saundersfoot Sports are still looking for their elusive first win of the season after going down at home against Milford Athletic on Saturday. Danny Lewis scored twice for the visitors, supported by a goal from Brian Clayton, and Steve Ruff scored the solitary goal for Sports.

Goodwick United 2 Carew 0

Keri Bradley came close to scoring for Carew in the opening minutes of this game and if the shot had found the back of the net, it might have made a difference to the result. However, with some regulars missing, the Carew players were unable to find the back of the Goodwick net and it was United who took the points. Bernie Armstrong gave Goodwick the lead after 30 minutes from a set-piece move. He rose above the defence to loop the ball over the head of 'keeper Ben Evans, who was just out of reach of the ball. Gavin Robb put the result beyond doubt when he scored Goodwick's second goal with the last kick of the game. Carew contested strongly throughout the match and were very much in the game until Robb struck that decisive shot. For Carew, Ben Evans was outstanding in goal, Seb Palin ran energetically up and down the left flank and everyone in the Carew team worked hard.

Reserve Division Two

Hubberston 5 Lawrenny 1

Lawrenny competed but were unable to score. The visitors defended stoically, but two goals by Richard Gammon, supported by goals from Ian Formstone, Gareth Hughes and Nathan Wells, gave Hubberston a deserved win.

Manorbier United 2 Solva 3

Although John McKeown scored twice for Manorbier, the visitors took the points with three goals.

Milford United 6 Pendine 0

The Seagulls were on the back-foot in their away match against Milford United and conceded six goals, ffrom Sean Barcoe, William Goodall, Jason Warlow, Daniel Bailey, Mark MaCarthy and Andrew Davies.

St. Clears 1 Prendergast Villa 1

Villa played well in the first half, but it was the Saints who opened the scoring with a goal by Steve Aston when he picked up a cross by Clive Reynolds. Within minutes, Villa had equalised with a goal by Gary Bignall into the top corner. In the second half, the Saints had the wind, but were unable to score. Steve Phillips hit the crossbar and Clive Reynolds created some good scoring opportunities. After the match, Reynolds had to go to hospital to receive treatment for a rib injury. For the Saints, Jason Owen pulled off some good saves, especially in the first half, Steve Phillips was creative in midfield and Jason Owens had a good game in goal.
