Aqua Boxes fulfil a vital role of the Rotary movement by helping people in emergency situations. The boxes are filled with essential community requirements needed after natural disasters, environmental problems or conflict anywhere in the world including volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunamis, drought or similar situations.
The boxes are held centrally in the UK by Rotary ready for rapid deployment in large numbers when and wherever required. Items collected include cooking equipment, bandages, cotton wool, clothes, toys, kitchen essentials and any basic goods required in disaster situations.
The Aqua Box itself, when emptied, converts rapidly into a very effective water filtration unit and is equipped with filters and sterilisation tablets to achieve a pure water supply.
Most recently, Rotarians at the Rotary Club of Narberth and Whitland were delighted to receive a box from head teacher Mrs. A. Humphries and the pupils of Ysgol Hendy Gwyn (Whitland Primary School).
Rotarian Graham Haddleton, president of the Rotary Club of Narberth and Whitland, and Rotarian Ken Morgan gave a short talk to the pupils on how the Aqua Box and its contents, when full, can provide essential emergency support to families and communities suffering from the consequences of natural disasters around the world. It is possible that this box might go to Thailand to help those who have endured the recent horrendous flooding.
President Graham thanked everyone for their valuable contribution.
"I promise you that somewhere in the world suffering children and parents will be very grateful to the pupils of Whitland Primary School for their generosity and kindness," he said.
