The Plash Inn, Llanfallteg, has won a top Jubilee Heritage Award in the national campagin to recognise the role that Britain's Prettiest Pubs play in helping to preserve the best aspects of the country's built environment.

Hundreds of pubs, bars and other hostelries from all over the UK competed for this unique recognition, launched to commemorate the Queen's Golden Jubilee and the role played by such establishments in safeguarding our national architectural heritage.

The award scheme was launched by The Green Organisation as part of its well-established and prestigious Green Apple Environment Awards campaign.

A spokeman said: "The Golden Jubilee is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to pay tribute to the role played by pubs and their owners in helping to preserve and promote some of the better examples of Britain's public buildings.

"Entries were not restricted to thatch-and-beams establishments, as we were looking for examples of any buildings that contribute to the overall environmental picture. In this way, it was just as appropriate to reward city centre pubs that might be newer in construction, but still make a positive contribution to the built environment.

"We had a terrific response to our appeal, which demonstrates the great pride that we all take in the attractive buildings that are such an important part of our heritage and traditions."

The Green Organisation is an independent, non-profit, non-political, non-activist environment group, dedicated to recognising, rewarding and promoting environmental best practice.

Their Green Apple Awards for countries, companies, councils and communities are in their ninth successful year and widely recognised as the ultimate accolade for environmental endeavours.
