Pembrokeshire-based playwright, Derek Webb, sees his play 'Call Me Dusty' return to West Wales for three of its last performances.

The play, which celebrates the 50th anniversary of the start of Dusty Springfield's solo career, comes to Theatr Mwldan on November 6, the Torch Theatre on November 13 and finishes the tour at Y Ffwrnes in Llanelli on November 22, where it has been transferred to the main house, having totally sold out in the Studio where it was originally scheduled to be.

The play has already been performed, and enthusiastically received by audiences, in Swansea, Monmouth, Newport, Barry, Abertillery and other venues in South Wales and England. Reviewing it, The South Wales Evening Post said: "The true success of the piece lay in the universal appeal of its writing. Because ultimately Derek Webb has written a heartfelt play of a young girl who succumbs to the lure of stardom which will appeal to fans of good drama regardless of any prior knowledge of the star at its heart."

And it has not only received critical acclaim, but has also been well received by fans. One commented: "They covered so much... so it was worth seeing and lovely to think that she is remembered and valued for the wonderful singer she was."

Derek Webb himself, says of it: "Call Me Dusty isn't a musical, but a play with music, In writing it, I wanted to disentangle myth and facts, and begin to understand the very complex character who was Dusty Springfield."

She was born Mary Isabel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien - a quiet, chubby, Catholic convent girl - and the play explores the dichotomy of this shy, private person and her alter ego with her extravagant black mascara and backcombed hair; while at the same time celebrating the music which still ranks amongst the best of its kind. Not for nothing is Dusty Springfield heralded as the finest white soul singer ever.

Playing Dusty is Jessica Sandry, who is in the new series of Stella with Ruth Jones on Sky TV. And, supporting her - playing a variety of roles - are James Scannell and Jayne Stillman.

Call Me Dusty is at Theatr Mwldan in Cardigan on Wednesday, November 6, the Torch Theatre, Milford Haven, on Wednesday November 13, and the tour finishes at Y Ffwrnes in Llanelli on Friday, November 22, All performances start at 7.30 pm. More details on the website: callmedusty.org.uk
