At the presentation ceremony for the Rotary Club of Tenby's 'Young Chef of the Year', 2007 competition, held in conjunction with Pembrokeshire College, guest of honour Nick Ainger MP (Labour MP for Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire), highly praised and warmly congratulated the winner Ben Brown, of Summerhill, Saundersfoot, and his fellow finalists in the competition, which had been very keenly contested. At the presentation ceremony, following a much- enjoyed and top quality meal at the restaurant facility at Pembrokeshire College, also attended by Pembrokeshire College executives and president Steven Williams and several of his fellow Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Tenby, Mr. Ainger highly congratulated Ben on his success and also warmly praised the runners-up, Kimberley Nicholson from Cilgerran, Anna Liatskon from Neyland, and Wesley Markham from Pentlepoir, on the high standards that they had achieved. Mr. Ainger went on to once again praise the college for the tremendous work that they continue to do in delivering high quality education for the students in all fields, and the Rotary Club of Tenby for again organising the competition, now in its fourth year, which was, he said an important showcase for the talented students to display their expertise. Mr. Ainger concluded by saying that the hospitality industry was a key to Tenby and Pembrokeshire's prosperity and that it was encouraging for the future to see such high standards being achieved. The competition was created to give young people the chance to show off their creative culinary talents and to learn important life skills. The young chefs had two-hours to prepare and cook medium rare duck, accompanied by a sauce, garnish and vegetables of their choice, taken from a mystery box of ingredients provided by local suppliers with predominantly local ingredients; followed by a chocolate torte with a cherry sauce. "The competition was great; it was an exhilarating two hours," said winner Ben Brown, who works part-time at the Parsonage in St. Florence and wants to eventually run his own restaurant. "Pembrokeshire College staff and students are very thankful for the efforts of the Rotary Club of Tenby in organising this competition," commented lecturer Mark James. "It helps to raise standards and aspirations for the next generation of professional chefs."
