Local councillors have backed a plea from the Tenby Sea Cadets organisation, who are seeking support to try and secure the future of the charity.
Correspondence from Mr. Craig Girling-Jones, Volunteer and Business Support Manager, of South West Area Sea Cadets, came before members of Tenby town council at their meeting on Tuesday night, writing on behalf of the existing volunteers as a last attempt to seek support for Tenby Sea Cadets.
It was highlighted that an urgent meeting had been called for all supporters to take place on Tuesday, April 30, at 7 pm, at Salvation Hall, Upper Park Road in Tenby, to discuss the matter.
“Tenby unit management team has been operating with minimal volunteer numbers for some time, and this meeting has been called in the hope that volunteers will come forward to form a management team and secure the future of the charity,” explained Mr. Girling-Jones.
“As an independent registered charity, it is essential that there is a board of trustees in place who have responsibility for all management aspects of the charity.
“The unit management team is required to meet at least every other month and are primarily responsible for the fundraising, facilities and safety of volunteers, cadets and activities.
“Should a full unit management team not be formed following this meeting, the unit will be at risk of closure. I therefore hope that parents, guardians and supporters will be able to attend the planned meeting and help secure the future of the Sea Cadets in Tenby.
“I am sure you will agree the closure of the Sea Cadet unit would be a great loss, not only to the local community, but most of all, the cadets who attend,” he added.
The Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane told her colleagues that it would be a ‘great shame’ if the organisation folded in Tenby.
“The Sea Cadets group gives a tremendous commitment to the town, and it would be a real shame if the group couldn’t attract people, so anybody able to give assistance and support to keep it going, would be fantastic,” added Clr. Laurence Blackhall.
